Genesis Around the World: Slacker's CDs & Games

People enjoy their Genesis all over the world, but right here in America there are some places where you can find some great games at decent prices. In a new feature series about Genesis gaming across the world, Sega-16 starts off right at home in the American Midwest. In our first installment of Genesis Around the World, we look at Slacker's CDs & Games, which is a great place for the discerning retro gamer to find some great games.

Too bad there's nothing like that in California. Chain-wise I mean. There used to be Funcoland but it died and Gamestop took its place. There is this really good store up in Antioch, 4jays, that has loads of classic gaming goodness. I went there last summer and spent around $400. It is a bit of a drive for me though.

4jays is nice, but their hours are ridiculous and their selection can be hit or miss sometimes. It's really sad that they're like the only classic game store in all of Northern California (now that Matt's Game Exchange is gone).

There's a chain in my area called Game Craze and I've gotten some damn sweet deals from them. For the most part, loose genesis games are 3 for $10. There are some exceptions, sadly.

But now, the selection is starting to get a bit dry -- but I have now moved on to ebay, and locally which has provided some decent finds as of late. Not the best options, but I can afford to pay more for less. :P

Good article, it'll be interesting to see how the series progresses, I only know of one retro gaming chain in Australia and I think the nearest store is interstate.

Michigan NEEDS to have something like this. Game Crazy is losing supply of older games along with Card Vault up north, so Slackers should hopefully come to Michigan as well (After all, Michigan is a midwest state).

been a Slackers customer since they started some 10+ yrs ago.

Used to do my 3DO shopping here. Hush, i like the 3DO.
I got my copy of Guardian Heros for $30 couple years back.

I've bought jag cd games, neo geo pocket, and old school nintendo from this place.

You can also get a rental membership, and rent any of the old school games. That is how i experienced most of the Sega CD library. Their original stores in Offalon IL, and offalon, MO are the best locations. I was very shocked to see Slackers as a feature. well done.

You can rent from Slackers??? I've never heard of this before...maybe they don't do it at the JC branch.

EDIT: I just called them, and the associate said that none of the branches offer rentals. Maybe you're information is outdated, Sneth?

i used to rent from the Offalon, IL one.

I've lived in west county STL for 2 years now....so it could be outdated



i admit, i burned copies of some of the rarer segaCD games when i rented, so i'd be able to play them more. eeeek

I'd love to hear about how you fufill your retro gaming needs in Australia. Flea markets, thrift stores, the bootleg scene - all of it would make for a great article.

The Slackers website has some of the rare games for cheap! Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel and Aero the Acro-Bat 2 for cheap! One of you guys GET IT!

The Slackers web site does not say what condition the games are in or if they include the box and/or instructions. That means I'll stay faaaar away from them.

Theres a place in stockton that sells classic video games. There selection is minimal when compared to 4jays, but its not a bad place. Its called the video game exchange.

Does anyone know if there are any retrogaming stores in Michigan? Like I said in the other post, all the other stores are getting rid of their stock for good. If not, are there any in Florida where I will be on vacation at in a month? I try to avoid internet purchases (Not having a checking account makes this extremely difficult).
