Is it still worth getting a new system?

I don't have any of the gaming consoles out now like ps2, xbox and gamecube. I kinda want to get one of these sytems yet it's a little late they are on their way out. What is your opinion is getting one of these systems worth getting now or should I wait?

I'd wait a bit more and get an Xbox, then mod it for emulation. I plan to do this specifically for MAME, as I own all the other consoles worth emulating. Playing MAME from my futon, on my 27'' TV, with stereo sound sounds just too good to pass up.

I have to keep my GameCube also, since the Revolution probably won't have anything like the GBA Player for some time. Even then, it won't run GB and GBC games.

Of course, both the PS3 and Revolution come out next year, so that gives you some time with the current consoles before you'll need to upgrade. Both the new ones are backwards compatible, making the PS2 and GC obsolete when the next gen hits.

Prices for old hardware and games tend to plummet when successors are introduced.

You could easily pick up either an Xbox or PS2 and buy up older and newer titles for cheap when 2006 rolls around.

I think the cube is a nice system that's cheap and worth getting. I've pretty much been playing 16-bit stuff since the early 90's but the gamecube has helped me realize new stuff isn't all that bad. The game boy player is a nice addition. Xbox and ps2 are both decent systems but if you're only going with one i'd suggest the cube.

Thing about the cube, is that it may not have as many titles, but the percentage of really good titles vs really bad titles is better than the other consoles.

Generally the average game rating for gamecube (imo) is B+. PS2 may have a lot of games, but so much of it is filler crap...

But if you have the money to get the next-gens coming up then I'd hold out... except for XBOX (as the 360 will only play a certain few games from the XBOX...). Also the XBOX has such a huge dev crowd that there is so much good stuff for it. Great thing too is the USB controller ports, (yeah its a proprietary design, but its basically USB and you buy a chip you get a converter with it.) You can plug in any USB controller you want for it! Along with XBMC, emulators, Linux, among other pimpin' shit makes it a great HTPC for REALLY cheap.

If you like having an all in one console get an Xbox come X-mas time when the price drops to $99 brand new, because being able to play the best looking current gen games is just the tip of the iceberg. Almost every system pre-Dreamcast is emulated on the xbox and most play great if not near perfect. Ninty's hyping up their next gen system: "Revolution" with the ability to play all their back catalogue of games? For us graced with a modded Xbox we've already been enjoying that advantage for 3-4 years now. Wanna play your original Sega CD, Neo Geo CD, or Turbo CD games on your Xbox to take advantage of enhanced resolutions and save states? DL yourself the various emulators out there, put in your original disc in the system and *bang* you got it. Playing games I owned on my DC like Mark of the Wolves, Mars Matrix, or Street Fighter Alpha 3 in arcade perfect form on my Xbox via FBA.XXX is too too sweet, especially with 2x Eagle resolution on my 50 inch big screen TV and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. Wanna play GBA games on your TV? Why waste your money on a GBA Player when Xboy Advance will play GBA Roms perfectly. Also the modability of current games like DOA, Grand Theft Auto, or Halo is really great. Bungie's been hyping their 4 new maps for Halo 2 and selling the pack for $19.99 and here I am with 50+ new user extracted/created/remixed maps for Halo & Halo 2 that add so much more to an already badass game for free.

Also gaming without a hardrive can really suck when you have tons of games, and anytime I have to juggle all my saves on my PS2 & GC memory card just to play a new game I ask why Sony & Ninty didn't think ahead like MS did. And there's another advantage, you can switch out that 8 gig HDD that is standard and put in a 200+ gig HDD so you don't even have to deal with loading cds & dvds, *whoosh* there goes any annoying load times!

And who could forget Xbox Media Center, this program alone is worth the price of the system as you can enjoy just about any form of video (irregardless of format or codec), audio, pictures, streaming media of any kind (imagine watching tv from any country in the world streamed into your tv for free), and don't even bother buying that DVD remote pack as a modded xbox will unlock that feature easily with DVDX. You never have to worry about what region a DVD is from, what codecs a video you downloaded is in, or anything. The media posibilities this program opens up is a godsend. I could go on and on but let's just say that XBMC blows what Microsoft is touting for their NEXT-gen system "Xbox 360" out of the water.

Top this with the fact that an Xbox can be easily software modded via a memory card exploit without the need to buy a chip at all makes it all the more easier to take full advantage of that big black box. IMO a modded Xbox brings you the best of a what a PC & a console can offer all in one system. Do I enjoy my GC & PS2? I sure do, but the sheer versatility of a modded Xbox, let alone all the awesome games already out for the system, is just too great a deal to pass up.
