Sonic 3 HELP: no Super Sonic

Sonic 3 & Knuckles actually.

OK I collected all 7 chaos emeralds but I don't see how to transform into Super Sonic. I collect 50+ rings and then I jump and do the instashield, but no Super Sonic. I don't get it. What do I have to do, to become Super Sonic???

Maybe you have come to the Hidden Palace zone, where all chaos emeralds are transformed into "shells" for the super emeralds. Then you have to beat all super emerald bonus levels, which may sound sucking at this point, but the good thing is you will be HYPER Sonic then.

That. You'll know if this happened if at any point you jumped into a giant ring and instead of the special stage you got teleported to the ring room and all of your chaos emeralds came out of sonic and transformed into the grayed out super emeralds.

Or you're trying to transform with a shield on and you need to lose the shield first.

Also, are you playing the original games on real hardware or a hacked version on an emulator? I know there's a hack out there that combines S3 and S&K where the transformation doesn't work as expected.

+1 This. Any Big Ring in the S&K levels (Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, Sandopolis, Lava Reef) will transport you to Hidden Palace, where you're emeralds are taken from you and you lose the right to become "Super".

Yup, I'm using real hardware, and yes, that must be what happened. While I was still collecting the 7 chaos emeralds, I did go into that giant ring in Mushroom Hill, and instead of a special stage, it was that room where the emeralds floated out of Sonic and became big grey super emeralds.

Ironically that happened before I even got all 7 emeralds. So when I finally got them all, I couldn't become Super Sonic even once. Wow. I have to say I'm ticked off. I spent days collecting the emeralds and no Super Sonic.

Everything was so simple in Sonic 2: get the emeralds, get 50 rings and jump in the air.....

I can't believe the game takes away Super Sonic abilities if u go into the wrong giant ring... Damn... That just seems awful!!!

Don't be pissed off, because most super emeralds are somewhat easy to get. I've been
getting those for the last couple days and have to say, normal emeralds seemed more
difficult. Only the last super emerald, that one sucks! Had like 10 tries yesterday, and was
already one blue sphere away from it, but nope, ran into red ones. Oh well, today I'll make
that last level my bitch, for sure this time.

Though I never knew that would happen if you didn't have all the Chaos Emeralds, I always had them all by the time I reached mushroom hill. You learn something every day.

I'm not sure if this will work, but you might try putting Sonic 3 in by itself and replaying old levels to collect all of the Sonic 3 emeralds, then put it back in the S&K cart to see if it works.

...Backup your save file to another slot first, of course.

If you glide into a wall, it destroys all the on-screen Badniks (like Hyper Sonic's double-jump action).

FWIW, that's only strictly true of the very first, obvious giant ring on each route. The other giant rings in the second half of the game will still lead to normal Chaos Emerald stages if you don't have all the CEs. If you purposefully ignore those first automatic flashing rings and go ahead to collect any remaining Chaos Emeralds, you can still be Super Sonic once you have them all - until you go into another giant ring, as they will then all take you to Hidden Palace.

No such luck. The Sonic 3 & Knuckles are kept completely and totally separate from the regular Sonic 3 ones, with only one exception: if you don't have any S3&K saves, the Sonic 3 ones will be imported and saved as S3&K games. (And if that didn't scupper the idea of keeping the original save file elsewhere, the fact that there's no copy option in either game might.)

The quickest way to get some amazing abilities is to follow a video of Mushroom Hill that leads you to a lot of giant rings - Sonic can get to at least eight. If you're already past there, and beyond Lava Reef in particular, where the last giant rings are, you can always come back once you've finished the save file - and your chaos emeralds will afford you one particular opportunity to be super before that anyway, without wanting to spoil too much if you don't know about it already.

It works as expected if you read that version's manual or use one of the patches.
However, yes, if you're expecting it to work the old way, it won't, by default.

It takes away the ability to become Super Sonic, but then it gives you the ability to become Hyper Sonic. It's worth the trade-off.

And if you know what you're doing you can get 7 Chaos Emeralds long before Mushroom Hill! I think the earliest I've ever been able to do it is by Marble Garden, but I think it might be possible to do it even before that.
