Between the Samsung and CXA2075? Yes very big difference, much clearer composite and much sharper s-video. Between the CXA1645 and CXA2075, much better composite and noticeably sharper s-video, but not huge. The CXA2075 only comes in surface mount.

You could get this to make it easier to solder http://cgi.ebay.com/2x-SOP28-SO28-SO...item1c157c439c

PDIP is smaller than DIP, PDIP is what the CXA1145 and CXA1645 come in, DIP is the bigger eprom size, like the Motorola CPU that's in the Genesis. So even using that adapter you need to solder wires, it won't be a direct swap.

So thats all I would need to install it into my model 1 just remote wire? it so that chip would cleaner with your S-video box even running it in the 32x like we talked about?

I use the CXA2075 in my S-Video boxes, I used to use the CXA1645 because I bought a small stash at a good price. Again it's not exactly a drop in replacement, you need to leave a couple points unconnected and add a resistor, then if you want s-video you need 2 more capacitors and 2 75ohm resistors. I'll have time over the weekend to open up my Gen2 and make a better explanation.

Do you have to use the caps and resistors with the 2075?

yes, exactly like on the CXA1645, 2x 75 ohm resistors and 2x 220uf electrolytic capacitors

That's a good question, I'll have to check as I use it with composite (I like the fake transparencies) and not s-video.

    lol, awesome.

The whole reason I changed out the encoder was for the best composite video I could get out of the Genesis and with the CXA2075 it looks better than with the 32X attached. It is a much sharper composite with better colors than the 32X.

Besides, not everybody has a television that can support component, or have the extra money to spend on an RGB-to-Component converter.

On a different note, even if one can't drop in a 1645, you can still draw the RGB right out of the console and convert it to s-video using a 1645, inside the console, right?
Well, the S-video mod doesn't seem like the easiest mod to perform, but it's
probably also not the most difficult one. But it is a modification, you have to open
up the console and solder around. So my point was, why bother, if you can avoid
doing that and get an even sharper picture. I know that it's going to be more
expensive, I just wanted to bring the possibility up, so that it doesn't seem like
modding the console for S-video is the only way to improve picture quality.

About drawing RGB and converting it inside the console: that's what the S-video
mod is all about afaik. Don't know about the possibility of external conversion to
S-video, maybe there is some sort of converter that accepts an RGB-cable and
converts it to S-video instead of component.

How does composite look on a modern HDTV? As good or better than S-Video?

Like ass, that's why I still have my 27" CRT SDTV for all my old school stuff, and my 34XBR970 for my newer stuff. S-Video will look clearer and sharper on any TV, but then you don't get the fake transparencies that are present in composite.

I shouldn't be so harsh about HDTV's, but I really like how these consoles look on SDTV's. Many people are very happy with how their system looks in S-Video on there HDTV.

For some examples of dithering you can look here http://retro-sanctuary.com/compariso...differing.html
