Default Why do my Genesis games looks WORSE through my 32X?

    Hey guys,

I was messing with two different Model 2 Genesis consoles with 2 different 32X modules and got he same results. My video is too bright, too red, and has a lot of ghosting when I use my 32X module and play SF II through it. I took some pics and attached them.

Note the blurry text and red hue when playing through 32X!

BTW, this is on a 1080p LCD through composite and I don't know which video encoder chips I have in these consoles yet. One is a 3/4 motherboard Model 2 and the other is a full size mobo Model 2.

I haven't tried this on my Model 1 consoles yet, but I was really surprised to see this. Is this to be expected? If so, I need to pull out my module when playing Genesis games or look for another solution (external s-video).

    Thanks...

Do you have a diffrent cable to connect the Genesis and 32x. The one you have may have a short in it.

Maybe it's because your 32X games look about 300,000% better than the Genesis ones and they look dissappointing afterwards? Sorry if this got your hopes up and made you think I may have had the answer by the way. Could be true though.

I find that HDTV's have more problems using a 32X than using the Genesis directly.. My TV won't even "see" the 32X when using Component video, but works excellent with just the Genesis.

@ t-scene...I tried two different pass-through cables with the same result.

@ cleeg... No, I'm talking about the same game with and without the 32X. See the pics I attached. Oh, just realized you were being a smart ass anyways ;-)

@evildragon... Yeah, I heard that LCD TVs are pickier about the level of video signal being fed to them. Maybe it's weaker with the 32X for some reason and it's resulting in artifacts like this? I'll try it again on CRT TVs... I have an SD and an HD CRT I can test on. About component...I know that my LCD won't even take 240p over component...at least it won't with my PS2 (playing a PS1 game)....

The 32X takes the RGB out from the Genesis and mixes it with its own RGB out, then uses its own video encoder to generate the picture. So the difference you are seeing is between the encoder in the Genesis versus the encoder in the 32X. Funny, but most people find the encoder in the 32X better than the one in the Genesis, especially model 2s.

Chilly Willy, that's what I thought too! Looking at the pics, though, I don't think my dislike for the 32X's output is subjective.

It was disheartening to see this because it means I'll be plugging and unplugging my 32X games more than I intended, plus the fact that I was expecting to see some better output with it.

Well, mine don't look that bad. Actually, I can't see any real difference between the 32X outputs and my Model2/CDX outputs. I guess you're just "lucky" on how "good" your 32X encoders turned out.

I have not tried my 32x on my lcd, but my cdx is very garbled on an lcd and constantly flashes. Have you tried on a regular tv? I kept a 27" old crt at my parents and brought it home and have been using that for the old stuff.

I'm using a Sceptre Multimedia monitor designed particularly for gaming - it has a 12ms response time (fantastic for when I got it - they even put it as "Ultra High speed" ), a VGA input, and svideo and composite inputs tailored for older consoles. I've got my Dreamcast hooked to the VGA input, and my CDX/32X hooked to the composite. It's what I do most of my MD/32X testing on.

While not as bad as the op, I was thoroughly dissapointed in the video quality out of my 32x.

After doing my own comparisons, The Nomad with these:

    http://www.amazon.com/Sega-Genesis-N...4759880&sr=1-4

Is the absolute best video quality, even better looking than the HD Sonics Ultimate Genesis Collection for ps3/360. Unbelievable good looking picture!

Not to mention the Nomad sounds better with these cables than any of the Model of Genesis' I have as well, nice deep bass.
I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

I think the Nomad looks and sounds better because they cut as many parts as possible to keep the price down and make it fit in the smallest case possible. Those parts probably came from the video and sound circuits, and oddly enough, less parts on those lines means better images and sounds. For example, instead of filtering the hell out of the sound, you just mix it and output it. You get RAW sound and video, which is better these days.

Your first problem is being that it is on a newer TV, older game systems always look better on CRT Television sets and by older I mean anything before Sega Dreamcast.

I agree. I now have a 20" SD CRT for my old games. The thing is, just look at the pics. Everything is pink and over-saturated with the 32X.
