Default Virtua Fighter 2 (Genesis/Mega Drive version) released for iPhone

    http://www.fonehome.co.uk/2011/01/20...ed-for-iphone/

Sega has released classic one-on-one fighting game Virtua Fighter 2 for iPhone. Unfortunately, it’s based on the Sega Megadrive version rather than the 3D arcade original.

Virtua Fighter 2 is now available to buy from iTunes, for £1.19. If you’re hoping to re-live memories of hanging around in a smoky, noisy arcade you may be disappointed though as this is a port of the Megadrive version of the fighting game, which uses parallax scrolling to give a 3D-like effect — rather than the 3D polygons of the Sega Saturn and arcade versions.

Virtua Fighter 2 includes eight fighters, each equipped with more than 25 different moves. Taking a slightly more realistic approach to dueling than genre classic Street Fighter II, there’s more martial arts involved here than flaming fireballs.

This iPhone version uses on-screen virtual controls to recreate the controller of the Sega Megadrive, or Genesis as it was known in the states. You can either play the game full-screen, if you can hack your fingers obsctructing those precious square inches of screen space, or watch the action in letterboxed form.

Virtua Fighter 2 is available from iTunes for £1.19 now. Already given it a go? Let us know what you think in the comments.
If that game couldn't any worse.... Why in the world wouldn't they release the 3D version?

Because the Genesis is easier to emulate and Sega love a quick buck.

It's just a bit above mediocre. Certainly not the game I would rerelease. Eternal Champions, goddammit!

I like the Genesis version better than the Saturn release.

    Sprites > Polygons.

The fighters in the Genesis version actually look kinda cool. Early generation 3D polygons look horrid in any game.

Are you serious? Virtua Fighter 2 for the Saturn looks better than any game ever released on the Playstation. One of the best looking games of the entire 32 bit era. The sprites used in the Genesis version couldve been much better, they look thrown together at the last minute, which is why a lot of people say that this game looks like a home brew game. Very lazy port that even still in 2d with sprites, couldve been much, much better.

The Genesis version of Virtua Fighter 2 is like a Game Boy version of an SNES game. Cant compare, especially in this case as a shitload of the moves were not even bothered with in the Genesis version. The game does feel like Virtua Fighter should feel, but its just too trimmed back, and missing too much. This is a strait up Milk Job, and not worth the spot it was given on the PS2 Genesis compilation, let alone a stand alone purchase for your cell phone. Unless your just obsessive of the Virtua Fighter series.

I agree with the Sprites > Polygons opinion, but not in the case of the Genesis vs Saturn ports of Virtua Fighter 2.
I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

    - there was no 3D fighter that looked anywhere near as good as VF2 on Saturn.

VF2 on MD looked piss-poor. Sure, the gameplay was left intact, but you can see the game was a rushjob to make some cash on the dying system where players were starving for new games.

The sprites are so small. And the bacgrounds lack detail. Surely this was because the Saturn-bgs were similar, but on Saturn you are zoomed in pretty close on the fighters most of the time, so it's no big deal there.
They should have used really big sprites, maybe pre-rendered like KI on SNES. A final MD game that shows high production values.

The MD could do so much more visually... just look at the SF II-games or Samurai Shodown. Or the pirate Top Fighter.

And only 8 fighters and the most basic game modes were a step back to 1991 too. I bet most of that 32 MBit-ROM-chip is empty.

If I was Sega I wouldn't want to remind the world of this sad chapter in their history.

Taken straight from my Reader Roundtable article on this game:

Maybe the screenshots just looked too nice. Maybe the whole idea of playing Virtua Fighter 2 on the Genesis (Sega Genesis Collection actually) was just too attractive. Maybe I just expected too much.

I thought initially that this was Sega's answer to the awesome Killer Instinct on the SNES: an arcade fighting game shrunk down on a 16-bit console, defying the odds with impossibly fluid gameplay. Was I so, so very wrong.

Screen shots were nice. Actual gameplay... not so much. It's a stilted, choppy mess in motion, and the sound doesn't fare too well either. Instead of awesome Genesis renditions of the music, we got tinny, metallic... NOISE. The voices were worse. And how exactly is this Virtua Fighter 2 with no Lion or Shun Di?

    What a disappointment.
