Default Sonicesque Vol. I -- An album of new, original Sega Genesis-style Sonic songs

If you are a fan of Sonic Music from the Genesis era, you are in for a treat. I have recorded an album of original Sonic-style music, drawing inspiration from those classic games. I used a VST plug-in called VOPM, which perfectly emulates the Genesis sound chip. It will feel like you are uncovering a lost Sonic soundtrack! Please give it a listen. I worked hard to make sure the music was of the highest quality. There are nods to classic levels such as "Mystic Cave Zone", and "Marble Zone", among others. Below is the Youtube link and the download link.
    Enjoy!

Downloaded and listening to it right now. At Flicker Island right now. Will post thoughts of it when I finish listening to it. So far so good!

    EDIT: Thoughts

    Title Screen: Great opener!

Flicker Island: Really good laid back track. I enjoyed this one.

Magma Ruins: Like how you incorporated the Marble Zone into this track. Feels right for the "Lava Level".

Sapphire Falls: Did I hear a hint of the Billie Jean bassline in this one? Sounds like it. This track reminded me of Spring Yard Zone. Another good one.

Special Stage: Very Sonic 1 Special Stage feel. Not a bad thing though. Kinda repetitive, but not bad by any means.

Shadow Cliff: Starts off amazing with the Mystic Cave sound. From the sound of this track, this sounds like a level that would wanna kick your ass. Great job on this one!

File Select: Very fitting for a File Select theme. Pretty catchy!

Windy Wetlands: Another good laid back track in the Sonic style. Good job!

Crystal Lake: If this is a water level this track would definitely help ease the frustration.

Crooked Caverns: Reminds me of Flying Battery Zone in some ways. Lots of energy in this one. Gets you in the mood to put a stop to Dr. Robotnik once and for all.

Skyway Station: Wow. This one is good.

Grand Gizmo: Screams final level all over it. Really dig the basslines in this one. Very good work with this one.

Big Bad Boss: The intro's kinda long but starts to pick up. And pick up in a good way it does. VERY fitting for a Boss theme.

Credits: Great opening melody! Flows through the Zones main melodies very well. Very good final track!

Overall, I really enjoyed this. You did an amazing job with this. Definitely will be waiting for Vol 2.
And yeah, you're getting Rep for this!

Not bad music, I always like hearing more FM tunes people make

Here's some criticism though, take it lightly None of this really is Sonic-esque at all to me to be perfectly honest. Besides the percussion you use which came from the Sonic games. The percussion though kinda comes off as the same thing each song though, making it really repetitive. Most of the tracks feel like "duh duh DUM" with the beat, at maybe different speeds between some songs. But generally they all keep the exact same pace, making it not really exciting from one level to the next.

All of the level songs also aren't really something I can imagine Sonic running through. Most sound calm enough for a game where you're walking, or even just as credits music. It doesn't really sound like what I'd expect for a game with all the action that goes on in a Sonic game. You know I mean? Special Stage must have been made with one like Sonic 1 in mind, since it's too tame for anything else where you'd be running, like in Sonic 2 and 3. It sounds like music that'd play in a shop when you're buying items to me =p

Tracks 2,3,8,9,10 and 11 feel like the same kind of groove since the percussion isn't that different between either of them.

Maybe that's as far as I'll take it. I hope you don't think this is bashing you lol. I wouldn't be aiming to have it known as a Sonic-esque album though since the style really isn't similar, the tunes aren't as melodic and forward moving as Sonic levels. They feel more calm, like I said earlier.

Anyway, it's still good music. I like

Cornholio857, thanks for taking the time to listen, and give me your thoughts! I really appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed them. And yes, since I have been getting good response, so I think I will make a volume II!

Bramsworth, thanks for your feedback. I'll admit these tunes aren't quite as fast and busy as much of the later Sonic music. But I think melodically, they are quite similar. I guess I was more influenced by Sonic 1 music, which really is pretty laid back. For Volume II, I plan on making it a lot more fast and upbeat, and what you would consider "Sonicesque". Thanks!

Even if these tracks are more mellow compared to most Sonic games, I like the style. These are some pretty badass compositions. I'll be waiting for Vol. II.

    Nice stuff there ^^
I'm not so keen on the choice of percussion... Sonic3+ have vastly superior percussion samples used.

That's pretty awesome. I'd love to actually hear these in a Sonic game. You should talk to some of the guys at sonicretro.org and see if you can get some of that music into the hacks they're always making.

A second volume was made, I love his style. Several "tribute" albums have been made recently, but much of that stuff was rubbish.

    Thumbs up

My favorite by far, I enjoyed your Midrange Lead work and the Sub was clean. Every one I clicked on was well done. As I listened to them, I thought to myself, "It'd be neat to be able to play the original 16bit Sonic games with these tunes".

Production sounded very clean overall as well, great job on that. Considering how youtubes compression can make anyones music sound poor, I was surprised to hear these sound so clear and well pronounced.

Pretty awesome work, I will comment more in-depth upon serious listening. OH, and KGB525, would you be privy to helping a newbie around VOPM? I also write OPL3 based music, but I'm not really any good at using the VOPM synth...
