There are people in this world that don't like Afterburner?

    ...may we burn them?

Well I can honestly say that after watching that episode I have absolutely no desire to ever play After Burner. However, that's fine because I had more fun watching the show then I would have had playing the games.

I will say that I've never really been satisfied with Afterburner unless I'm playing the arcade game, or an emulation with the stick and throttle.

There is a flight stick/throttle combo available for the PS3, and pairing it with Afterburner Climax is fucking awesome.

On the issue of "where the memory went" in the SMS version: I think it may be due to the heavy use of dynamic tiles rather than sprites. (to allow the large and numerous objects-onscreen without flicker and without the choppiness and attribute clash issues seen in Space Harrier)

Also, I totally agree about the melody versions . . . a shame that the Genesis and 32x versions didn't get those (even optionally).

Oh, and Tomaithous mentioned in a previous discussion that the scaling effects may be realtime software scaling and not faked with animation. (especially given how choppy and torn it is)

Just saw the new episode and it was great as always, although Dave constantly complaining about the game did get annoying after a while.

As for After Burner III, it's not a port of G-LOC. It's a port of another unrelated Sega arcade game called Strike Fighter, which is similar to G-LOC and was even released a year after that one.

I do agree with both of you that the GBA port is seriously boring. It's also the first time I see some footage of AB: Black Falcon. It looks decent. Climax looks amazing, though.

EDIT: Now that I remember, I noticed that, during the part with the Genesis version, during the refill sequences and between some stages there were some texts on screen, and I never remember seeing those. What do you have to do to actually display them? Input a code? Select Hard difficulty? Play it on a Japanese console?

The text can generally be displayed by spamming buttons and directions when it shows up. This works in almost all versions of After Burner/AB2, though the Genesis version has different and more bizarre text. I think the original text is an attempt to give the game a story. Match kidnapped your girlfriend or some shit, I dunno.

    Oh yes please.

Great episode guys! After Burner is the reason I am a gamer. I absolutely do not understand gamers who don't love playing this game at least for a short rush.

Did After Burner 1 see a US Arcade release? I must have always ever played After Burner II as the biggest disappointment about the Master System version was the lack of throttle. I have been embarrassing myself for decades complaining about that making the game not_an_After Burner game.

I also always thought After Burner III was G-Loc, but it is actually a fellow Y Board G-Loc clone/sequel called Strike Fighter. The only way to tell is to compare the ground graphics to Strike Fighter and G-Loc though.

I don't understand why Dave is hating on Afterburner so much. It's a wonderful pick up and play game that is challenging and features some killer music. I can understand why the newer generation of games who weren't raised in the arcades wouldn't "get it".

It's just that not everyone can like a game or series equally, believe it or not. For example, I'm not too fond of the Zelda shit Nintendo has been shoveling (with the exception of Link to the Past) and everyone else on the planet seems to love Zelda more than life itself and would murder a whole pile of babies just to get a new one 3 hours before street date. Some of us just have different opinions.

    Oh, screw you, Joe!!!
How come you didn't drop like 400 bucks to show us the colorful crappy FM Towns version?
You're just lame... I hate you!
I'm also tired of your rant against great companies like CRI.
Looks like you never played Dyna Brothers or their almighty Galaxy Force II version for the Genesis... SHAME ON YOU!
