I think that if you torrent stuff alot (like me) that is important to have an anti virus program I use spyware doctor and I works great. Also even If you do not torrent stuff just get a virus scanner it could save your computer.Did you know there is some virus that can delete the bios or something like that.Just don't put your computer at risk.

Norton was always known to bog down the system and slow it down BUT from what I've heard they really improved with the 2010 versions. I read they increased speeds by %40 or something like that. Still. I wouldn't buy it. MSE is still less intrusive and free.

I've also used Avast and AVG in the past. I noticed with AVG I think it was ver 4 the real time email protection REALLY slowed down my email. It got annoying so I ended up shuting that feature off. Once again with MSE I can't even tell it's there.

Seriousy I know I've said it and a few others have said it but if you haven't checked out Microsoft Security Essentials don't let the fact it's M$ put you off. It's amazing how low key it is and yet like I said it's found viruses even Norton missed at work.

I use Avast and I really like it. That with combined with Super AntiSpyware nothing has really harmed my computer in years.

Avast is really nice for people who are just plain stupid on computers. It will actually yell at you and prevent you from opening a site if it detects a it has viruses. And Super AntiSpyware is a wonderful spyware removal tool. It actually gets rid of the stuff most tools can't like those annoying fake antivirus programs. And I've noticed NO performance change when using these two programs.

It's called Win CIH (aka chernobyl) and it only works on non-NT windows (95,98,ME), even if it could affect modern systems, newer bios are safe from it and the other payload (messing up the MBR) is very easy to recover from.
    This thread needs more... ENGINEERS

I use Avast too, and Ad-Muncher for the ads. If a site asks politely to enable ads I tend to oblige.

I was using Norton before I switched to Linux. Norton slowed it down too much, runs real good on Ubuntu though

It's funny how things change. Sorry for the necrobump, but here's my experience with anti virus the past few years:

Avast is a POS, I uninstalled that when they started bugging me with constant pop-ups and shit. Straw that broke the camel's back is they screen your emails, so bye-bye that went.

Windows Defender is crap. On Windows 10, it slows your machine down if you have a Harddrive, and is tbh, garbage. Good luck disabling it though, Microsoft make changes every few updates to make it harder to shut it up.

Malwarebytes is the best. You can live with the free version, but I suggest going for the Premium version for live system protection and better scanning.

Also, final note: don't do what the OP suggests: that's retarded. In this day and age, with ransomware, keyloggers and trojans that can infect you with you just being connecting to the 'net, let alone surfing it, you need protection. And do daily scans.

If you block ads properly and dutifully, a primary vector for compromising systems is closed off. Ad servers are most often filled to the back teeth with malware.
    - Where it's always 1992 (or so).
    Youtube - Terminated
    BitChute - Fragmented, but functional

Agreed, I block ad servers right at the router and then use noscript and adblock in my browser. much more effective than having some retarded anti virus nanny that monitors everything you do.

cracks/keygens are still the main way of infection for most ppl. particularly gamers but not only.
Just reddit everything and you'll be safe, but it takes time

True, but even normal software installers can infect you. Crap like OpenCandy or InstallCore can sneak in that way. Even worse stuff like ransomware can be packed in to even legit software like Classic Shell was a few years back. A good program I found awhile back that helps is Unchecky, which scans an installer for hidden junk and warns you.

That's why I don't even bother with those anymore, I'm an adult so I just buy my games from Steam or GOG when they're on sale.
of course's there's still the fan made mod/fixes that could contain crap, you just never know.

But without cracks, how will I hear the most fresh chiptune jams? The government took down the KeyGen Juke Box. Morons, it only had free music on the site, no cracks or software of any sort.

Avast is fine for me. Used it for a decade. Served me well. Also, use Ublock on FireFox.

Life!? ... What console is that on?

95% of the games I buy are from second hand shops and are 12+ years old, so I use cracks. Mostly NoCD ones.
