Going to push the envelope pretty hard - the NES.

I have hundreds of real carts, many rare, and I don't find myself ever playing the thing. I'd rather just play Genesis or SNES. I blame composite. Once I got setup on SCART/component I can't stand composite video. I bought a Master System and a good number of games to replace the spot in my heart the NES held.

Shinobi III is in my top 5 Genesis titles. I'd could play it all day long and never tire of it.

I can't think of any Genesis games that fit this thread for me although I haven't played The Immortal in a long time and I'm worried it won't be as cool. Seeing Shinobi III of all games mentioned makes me sad.

I loved arcade Rampage and Karnov back in the '80s. They do very little for me today.

*edit - I thought of a Genesis one: DJ Boy. It's still playable but my memory of it was better.

Well, for me it's gotta be Pong. Just can't get into it anymore for some odd reason. That old pong machine just sits and collects dust...

It clearly is, the shurikens are a bloody nuisance. The problem is it's so flat (Astal has deeper lv construction) and such a pushover. When I picked it up again recently it'd been so long since that I had the stages' order completely jumbled in my head--the rising platform stage for exm coming after the stage with the burning forest backdrop and the water tanks--but once I'd reacquainted myself with the double jump's timing I had no trouble beating the game on Expert. Then I came here and read the review...where I discovered Joe can block projectiles. Leave it to Sega to make their dolphin games harder than any Contra but their ninja games easier than Sonic. I'm not a challenge freak by any means but there's only so much time one can put into what is essentially a very slick feather-light version of Altered Beast.

Believe it or not saddening you wasn't the post's intent. Actually I shied from mentioning this feeling when everybody and his dog was bitching about how much cash Hagane commands.

I think Ecco's case stems from regional development differences. European-made games were still known for high difficulty like they were in the 8-bit era while Japanese ones were becoming easier on average.

There's a couple that stand out for me - Who Framed Roger Rabbit (NES) and Blaster Master (Also NES). I can remember being so jazzed about both games as a kid - I'd stay up nights playing the ever loving hell out of them, and yet when I play them today, I can't stand more than 5 minutes of each.

Nothing's really the same for me... Though I'm currently in touch again with an old friend and we play lots of old Megadrive games, it's great!

Here's an odd one for me: BASS Masters Classic Pro Edition.

I first played this game when it appeared on the Sega Channel (this would be 1997). I hadn't played or had even been aware of any other fishing game before, so this late-release game packed full of strange sponsors, backwoods hick music and hilariously amped-up descriptions of the fishermen was oddly intriguing for me, and I ended up playing it for quite some time, trying to figure the game out - I even managed to catch the odd fish! So yeah, I enjoyed it back then. Whenever I've tried to play the game since, I do wonder what the hell I was thinking. With all the awesome games that were usually on the Channel every month, I really must have had something wrong with me to devote a sizable amount of time to a really lousy fishing sim. I could have been playing a brilliant air management sim instead!

You're entitled to your opinion like everybody else. I don't know what it is about video games that annoys people so much when others don't enjoy the same games as them.

For me anyway it's Golden Axe. It just bores me to tears these days. I can still play the original Streets of Rage but it has to be with a friend or I'll lose interest fast.

The Sonic games have sort of lost their charm even though I still say they're some of my favorite games ever. The reason is because I can play through them with my eyes closed at this point so I don't get the same thrill anymore. The old Super Mario games and a few of the Mega Man titles are similar for me in that regard.

Most old fighting games that I used to love are so stiff and awkward by today's standards as well.

And for some reason I was really good at EA's "Strike" series as a kid but now I'm terrible .

Don't want to play or buy Shoot'em up anymore, and the same for the most of old RPG (few exceptions).
But I like a lot more Beat'em all than before. Strange, tastes and colors surprisingly changed through time.

Going strictly by that sort of feeling, I'd have to say at one point or another I've tried to get into all of my favorite games but over the last ten years I have about ten or twenty minutes of patience for them before turning them off. Shinobi III included. I think back to some of the marathon gaming sessions I used to put into these games and wonder if I can experience that euphoria once more, but I just can't. My appreciation for what the games brought to the table, and still have over any other game today, hasn't changed but my ability to zone out while playing them has. I imagine I just need to play more and I'd start enjoying it more again.

Basically any racing game from before the 3D polygonal era. You know, the ones where it looks like your car/motorcycle/whatever is stationary in the middle of the screen while the track is pulled through underneath you. They feel very fake and artificial nowadays. One of my most recent Mega Drive purchases is Lotus II RECS, a game which I used to love back in the day as Lotus III for MS-DOS PC, but it has lost all of its charm now. There is no real driving skill involved in these games at all, at best they're just fancy obstacle courses.

    Most NES games, sadly.

    this.
Exceptions are Road Rash, Skitchin', and overhead + isometric racers such as Micro Machines and R&RR.

Yes, Road Rash and Skitchin' are exceptions because they are more like beat 'em ups than racing games. And I agree on the overhead and isometric games, Micro Machines is still loads of fun to play. In any case, I was aiming mostly at the pseudo-3D games that attempt to portray actual racing. The technology then was just too limited to do a decent racing simulation.
