Genesis Sega Mega Drive 1 vs Mega Drive 2 AV output

    Hi,

I have an Australian PAL Mega Drive 1 and Mega Drive 2, I won the Mega Drive 2 in a cereal box competition so I started using that when I got it as a kid but now I have heard the Mega Drive 1 has better audio.

I just bought 2 sets of AV cables for my Mega Drives and I think the AV output on the Mega Drive 1 is worse than the Mega Drive 2, I am outputting to a 51" plasma but the Mega Drive 2 output looks noticeably better, the Mega Drive 1 looks muddy and soft.

Is this normal? Perhaps the set of cables for the Mega Drive 1 from ebay are of bad quality? I also noticed most Mega Drive 1 cables only have a yellow and white output, I bought one with yellow white and red I am guessing it's just splitting the audio..?

    Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure which one looks netter through composite but if I were you I would get a rgb scart cable and component or HDMI converter and the picture will look amazing on either system.

The Mega Drive one only outputs mono through the back. You have to use the Head Phone jack for Stereo sound.

Oh yeah I remember now, stereo through the jack :X. I don't suppose you have any videos comparing how good this rgb scart to hdmi picture is? Or any links to more info? Thanks.

Hmm that's pretty cool, the contrast in those images is similar to how I see the Mega Drive 1 vs Mega Drive 2, the Mega Drive 1 also seems to have some small artifacts around the place. It doesn't bother me that much but I bought a Mega Converter for my Mega Drive 1 so I can play my Master System games on it, instead of fumbling with the RF so I was a bit dismayed to see the quality loss, I just wanted to be sure the quality loss wasn't due to the possibly dodgy cable I bought from eBay for my Mega Drive 1.

Well a poorly made cable couldn't help anything thats for sure. There are bunch of people on here that know much more than myself. I'm sure they chime in.

Right. It won't help if a defect in the system or cable is your issue. That converter does a near perfect yet simple and direct transcode. No upscaler, filtering, or 50/60hz fixing. Hence your TV must be compatible with a console's video output mode. Nonetheless the approach still gets my highest recommendations. Closest quality much of our American component CRTs can get to a real SCART set.

    @OP
It's all about the video encoders mainly, not the Mega Drive model... There are many threads at Sega-16 talking about this, deeper. Just search and read a bit.

Yeah you're pretty out of luck with basic AV looking good on most Mega Drive or Master System based hardware. Sega didn't introduce their major video encoder upgrade until the Saturn.

Maybe I am just seeing things lol, here are two photos I took, the first from the Mega Drive 1 and the second from the Mega Drive 2:

The Mega Drive 1 has the Sony CXA1145P and the Mega Drive 2 is VA1/1.8 with a Fujitsu MB3514.

I guess the artifacts are the same but the Mega Drive 2 looks more saturated.

I'm just wondering whether I should buy the scart to component cable for the Mega Drive 1 or 2, I will most likely go with the MD1 but would the RGB picture differ that much from the MD1 and MD2?

    Thanks

Well if you like having sound I would go with the model 1 cable.

Be careful if it's an LCD. Some HD sets like mine, do not accept low-resolution by their component inputs. Even though they will over AV and svideo.
