Default Cosmic Carnage / Cyber Brawl questions

I picked it up and found that I love Cyber Brawl.

--During the fighting, fists and kicks will at times seem to be scaled when they get closer to the screen, especially spinning attacks. I'm wondering if the hardware is really scaling these limbs as they attack... Or are these pre-rendered animations? Wondering bc it wd seem more impressive if the hardware truly IS scaling these hands and feet during attacks...

--When you (use the simple code to) switch bw Cosmic Carnage and Cyber Brawl, all the fighters have the same moves, right?

--Also, why in the world would Cosmic Carnage be preferable to the original Cyber Brawl? This is just a speculative question, I guess, but the whole game is much more interesting IMO with 4 humans vs. 4 alien creatures. I can't imagine why ALL alien creatures wd be more appealing, to anyone...

--Who do you like to fight as? I love Naruto (in human form). Love the giant scaled sword slash!!!

I love the Ninja guy as well, the rest are just fodder to me. I haven't spent any time with Cyber Brawl though, just Cosmic Carnage with all aliens. I have always supposed that the circular scaling moves are using scaling because of the slowdown and the fact that no other game from the 16-bit generation tried that. The closest thing I can think of is El Viento's explosions and those are obviously just animations. I can imagine that Cosmic Carnage's character animations are just that, in the same way that SNES Turtles in Time's screen throw is an animation, but for some reason that kind of animated effect was almost unused on 16-bit platforms.

Do you find that code to switch to Cyber Brawl actually works? I never managed to make it work. What's the trick?

The code has worked fine for me, no problems.
I just hold down all the buttons for the code (X+B+Z+start), as soon as I turn the power on (the first screen being the SEGA logo). If it doesn't work at first, I'll just hit reset, and again try holding all those buttons before I even hit reset, lol.

You'll know if it worked as soon as the scrolling text comes up. If it's the normal plot story, then it didn't work. If it's a better story, it worked.

Yeah I'm inclined to assume that the circular scaling moves ARE using the 32x hardware to really scale them. At least, I'd LIKE to assume that it's really using the extra hardware for those effects. It would suck to find out it's all just pre-rendered animations.

Also, yes I'm pretty sure I've never seen such scaling of hands and feet used in a fighting game, or any other game at all! I think the effect is great and shows off the added muscle of the 32x -- assuming it's real scaling effects, not just animations. Maybe the scaling attacks are the single most unique part of the game!

As for slowdown, I don't think it's really slowdown. I think it's a deliberate effect, like in Street Fighter II -- each hit that connects makes everything freeze for a split-second. It just makes it more dramatic, for every hit that connects. At least, that's my impression of it.

I'm just as happy to enjoy the slowdown as a dramatic effect, just like in SFII. I'm going to have to try that code today, I vaguely remember playing it with humans but that would have been back in the day.

Hmm maybe it just doesn't work on emulators. I'll pick the cart up and try it, they have it at a flea market here for $5. I just refused to buy it because I never got the code to work lol.

The 32X hardware handles the game's sprites, the platform in which they fight on and the HUD, while the Genesis handles the backgrounds and music so yes, the 32X is scaling the sprites. The only significant change between CC and CB is that 4 of the 8 characters were originally human, and most of the characters have different names (why Sega of America changed them to all aliens is beyond me, stupid decision IMO that made the game even less appealing). Otherwise they're identical.

From what I've played, I like Naruto and Jake/Cylic. Any more questions my nigga?

That's it, but to be clear, I know the 32x does the sprites, & I had assumed the platforms too. Also of course the 32x does the total-screen zoom.

My question really is whether the characters' FISTS and KICKS are truly being scaled every time they do certain moves, especially spinning moves. I'm assuming these body parts are really being scaled when they get closer to the screen, but it also seems possible they're just pre-drawn animations... After all the moves look exactly the same every time you do them...

The characters themselves are segmented rather than one large animated sprite like most games. I'm almost 100% positive all the scaling you see with special moves and so forth is just fancy sprite animations and not an actual scaling sprite. How could you "scale" a spinning kick? Each frame of the animation is redrawn from a totally different perspective to give a rotating effect, it's not like it's a static leg sprite that zooms in and out. They drew the animations in those moves in an exaggerated, over the top style that mimics what you saw in early polygonal fighters.

The camera zoom in during throws, win poses, etc is obviously a true scaling effect.

Thank you so much for the code. I had no idea there was one. I also believe the game would have been more appealing if it came out as Cyber Brawl with Cosmic Carnage as the bonus.

If the code does not work for you try holding down (X+B+Z) all together when the game starts and then press "Start". That is how I got it to work. SWEET!

Almanic, which developed "Cosmic Carnage", also developed the earlier released "Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter" for Genesis, which also has segmented sprites. They also developed what I consider to be the "spiritual ancestor" to CC, the mediocre "Fighting Masters" for Genesis. Can't believe I owned that turd....thanks dad for thinking it was a good idea of picking up that game for me.

    Thumbs down

UGH this game was such a turd. I'm glad I paid 2.00 dollars for my copy back in the day. I really don't know WTF Sega was thinking when they made this game. I mean it's so fuckin slow and it looks so bad. i can find more Genesis and SNES games that look and play much better than this shitfest.
