    Megadrive Earnest Evans (Mega CD)

Wolf Team worked on a trio of games that told the story two adventurers out to save the world. Opinions on Anetís two outings are varied, but people are pretty much in the same boat when it comes to the first game, Earnest Evans. A great idea and some nifty presentation are undone by ridiculous sprite animation and wonky control. This was supposed to rival Indiana Jones but fell short on so many levels. Read our full review and stick with El Viento.

I have a soft spot for this game, but the review is fair. Certainly the controls can be maddening, and it's rather buggy. Still, I found it genuinely fun to play (and beat), maybe because it's such a bizarre, off-kilter affair. The music is good, the sound FX fairly terrible with the same farty explosion noises that so many Wolf Team games use.

I'd probably give it a 5 or 6. It's certainly MUCH better than the dreadful Anet Futatabi.

Does the Japanese manual mention the bizarro power-up you get in a semi-secret area in one of the early levels, that gives you a flaming whip or whatever it was? It's so strange -- it appears in that one place, and nowhere else in the game -- it almost seemed like an inside joke.

I wish I could understand the cutscenes. I can make out a word (or a proper name!) here and there, but not enough to get more than the very basic gist of them. It'd be nice if someone would figure out how to add subs to 'em, but maybe that's impossible.

The review was spot on; this game play is poor.

Your wish has been answered! The cutscenes have been translated:

And he also posted a Youtube video with the subtitles (you have to turn on closed captioning to see them):

Man, this story is really something. If only the damn game wasn't there to get in the way all the time...

Also, gotta love that headline about Capone getting arrested:

    "Iron Maiden Live
    Live After Death
    The World Slavery Tour"

    Yeah.
