Initially, regular users could give negative rep... lol

I explained my findings (from my extraordinary deduction skills) in another thread, but I'll post them here too...

First, when someone reps you, you gain rep equal to their current rep power... THEN

The amount of rep you have received divided by 100 rounded down (also indicated by your green bars) +
    1 at your 50th post +
Your total number of posts divided by 250 rounded down +
Each full year you've been a member =
    YOUR REP POWER

By your green bars I can see you are between 100 and 200 rep points received (1) +
    You have reached 50 posts (1) +
    You have reached 250 posts (1) =
    3

Easy as pie... you don't need a math degree to figure it out, but it helps... And it helps to be as awesome as me too.

Best explanation I've seen. Better than the site's help/faq on the topic, IMO.

My only problem with your formula is, since I've been here a few years, I should have at least a few rep power, but apparently I don't. I'd like to have at least a little, just so that when I rep someone, they get more than just a texty comment on why I repped them.

Still, your formula is telling, thus useful. And, averse as I am to others' self-credding, you do possess a certain amount of awesomeness. Thus I rep SpaceFlea's quoted message, for whatever that's worth. :/

i agree this is how it should be, surely. i thought, up until yesterday, that this is how it was. why have some mathematician style rep system that(if you have been hammering substances that delete some of your brain like me lately) is quite hard to fathom
