    Default Shmup Contests: Official Thread

I hope to make this a staple and have the help of Sega-16's shmuppers in doing so.
Shmups aren't restricted to those on 16 bit or even Sega machines.
Pretty informal, but some timeline is needed to help out those contestants with less free time than others.
Thanks in advance to everyone who participates and otherwise contributes.

Inaugural Competition Shmup = Summer Carnival `92 Recca (Famicom).
    Commencement Day: 11/18/11
    Conclusion Day: 11/25/11

That's a very esoteric start. I'm up for whenever the challenge involves something closer to home.

    Suggestions for next challenge:

    Genesis:
    1. Fire Shark
    2. Bio-Hazard Battle
    3. Insector X
    4. Forgotten Worlds
    5. Viewpoint
    6. Thunder Force II
    7. Truxton

    Sega CD:
    1. Android Assault
    2. Silpheed
    3. Sol-Feace

    Sega 32X:
    1. Kolibri

    Sega MD:
    1. Darwin 4081

    Dreamcast:
    1. Giga Wing

    PS2:
    1. Mobile Light Force 2 (A.K.A. Shikigami No Shiro/Castle Shikigami 1)
    2. Castle Shikigami 2
    3. Gradius V
    4. R-Type Final
    5. Silpheed: The Lost Planet
    6. Anything from SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1

    NES:
    1. Gradius

    SMS:
    1. R-Type

    Wii:
    1. Anything form the Ultimate Shooting Collection
    2. Is there a shmup in Data East Arcade Classics? Then that.

Nice suggestions, but Kolibri can't be done. It has no scoring system.
32X alternatives could involve After Burner or Space Harrier. Maybe even Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000.

Also Shadow Squadron, although that's an entirely 3D shump...

I'd totally be in if we did a competition for Space Harrier or After Burner!

    (1) = The Coop and I have briefly discussed parametres. Fire Shark and Truxton were two examples of his on problematic games due to their looping: a loop limit would have to be imposed, but the problem with these is how restricted their scoring system becomes w/o looping (Fire Shark's is virtually exponential based on bomb stock). Not to rule them out, just a head's up. Of course I'm game for Fire Shark whatever the rules.
    (2) = Dreamcast and other later gen games will be harder to coordinate due to restricted emulation. I do second Giga Wing, and raise you Mars Matrix (or a 1 lv challenge in Mars Matrix), but we'll have to see how many DC owners we can corral. Shikigami 2 is also on DC, along with Trizeal (Radirgy's out for PS2).

And what kind of scoring flexibility does R Type Final have? Any at all?

    Good to have you.

Excellent news. We'll definitely cover the Sega classics at some point. Perhaps after the competition's attracted more regulars: it'd be sad if only six people showed up for Space Harrier.

That's 4,116,706 finished at 25:27:08 on my last life.
    I give up.

I was just pointing out the only shmups I owned. I could do Space Harrier, but it'd have to be II on the Genny.

P.S.> I just acquired U.N. Squadron on the Snes, btw. So there's anotherone for yas.
