I read that it's because pizza uses tomato paste as an ingredient.

But tomato is a FRUIT. Jesus, even the epic fail fails.

This sounds like typical american politics. You have a problem, someone tries to address it, someone else who has a financial stake pays politicans so that they don't lose any revenue, and the politicians take the money and pretend to fix the problem without actually doing so (and in some cases, make the problem worse).

Pizza's not inherently bad for you, but American kids are getting fat. I don't think we want to hand them cheese for lunch every day (not to mention the fact that frozen food is usually the higher in fat, salt, preservatives, etc. than freshly prepared food).

To be honest I think the way that lunchroom food is prepared and what they choose to offer is the real danger here in the States. I swear some of the slop they serve isn't suitable for goats, let alone people. Stop hiring untalented hacks to poorly cook and prepare already unhealthy food and give some more options and then maybe the obesity problem could be helped.

With the way the food companies run things now in the schools and summer camps and whatnot though, that won't change.

It's like that here too, though not everywhere. The food served in my college's cafeteria is absolute garbage, and I haven't eaten there in years. The food served in my university's cafeteria however is actually not bad, it even has macrobiotic food which is great.

(Just to clarify, Universities in Portugal are a conglomerate of multiple colleges, I have no idea how it is there in the states)

This story is a pretty pathetic example of just how sold out our politicians are. They would rather have our nation crumble apart then lose a few bucks.

I tried imagining american schools with macrobiotic food and just started laughing. I'm sorry.
Still, it's also an educational problem. I've seen some documentaries where kids in america actually ask for only french fries despite there being more food available, even meat. They just go for the fries, and then buy a soda.

Macrobiotic, does that mean that the food born illnesses caused by fecal-oral transmission will be visible in our food?

They used to serve burgers, fries, and other unhealthy foods at my high school, but about a year after I graduated, they changed all that. Apparently, they only serve vegetables and fat free foods, and they got rid of the Coke/Pepsi vending machines and replaced them with vending machines that contain only juice and water.

No, it just means it has lots of vegetables and grains.

But, can I see microscopic pits of poopy in fruits and vegetables? I just REALLY don't want to dry heave for a week ever again.

How can schools consider their pizza a vegetable when they can hardly consider there pizza a pizza?

Indeed! I recall school lunch pizza to being akin to a contraceptive sponge with soggy, week old toppings.
