Separation Anxiety sucks... a lot. If you're used to the quality of SoR, then this will be a major downgrade in terms of quality. Maximum Carnage is an excellent game, unfortunately it's only 1 player but maybe give it a try anyway. Not sure about Power Rangers since I never played it.

If you have a Sega CD you might want to try Final Fight CD since that whole series is basically a rip off of SoR.

Two Crude Dudes is a side scroller like Altered Beast. It is a good game though and ought to be a blast two player.

I love Two Crude Dudes because it isn't a button masher. You have to time your attacks and wisely use objects as projectiles from the levels to succeed. Don't let the tacky 90s look and sound fool you, it's a quality beat 'em up. The Punisher is a good beat 'em up with plenty of moves at your disposal. Both the above are graphically a far cry from their arcade counterparts but it doesn't stop them from being excellent games in their own right.
The original Double Dragon is on my "to buy" list.
    Babies...the unfortunate by-product of a good time.

I actually had a blast playing the Power Rangers way back in the days, but I've always been a big Ultraman TV show fan, so I don't know if it would be too infantile for you. It plays just like most side scrolling beat em' ups, but with the Rangers as stars. Each Power Ranger has it's own special weapon along with the standard punches and kicks. There are the standard power ups, and there are a few Megazord stages where you fight as the giant robot for variety. Like I said, as long as you don't find the Power Ranger "theme" in itself infantile, I really think you'll enjoy the game. H.G.

Do now lol. I guess it's just the sequels that ripped off SoR. Either way, they're pretty similar. Chances are if he likes SoR he'll like FF as well.

Final Fight was originally called Street Fighter '89.

Axel Stone is a Cody Travers clone
Max Thunder is a Hagger clone
I don't know how the Final Fight sequels ripped off SOR there different style beat em ups.

I will list a few 2-Player beat em ups I think are worth a look
Alien Storm underrated beat em up for me at least (Golden Axe with Aliens)
BattleToads and Double Dragon (Sweet game, a little frustrating in the platforming areas)
MMPR The Movie is solid (great music, nice graphics, decent variety of moves, no enemy variety very lazy)
The Punisher (This games fun factor with a buddy is through the roof, brutal game and I love it) Nick Fury FTW

Stay away from the Double Dragon games
Maximum Carnage is overrated, Separation Anxiety is a worse version of the game but 2-players
