    Default Xband Modem

I was perusing eBay for random deals and found a listing. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SEGA-GENESIS...item5ae3e6db3b

Interesting, no? Not sure if it could be used now but I think I remember some people working on getting online play to work or something.

Only through notorious hacking will it connect since 1997.
    The internet doesn't apply here.

There has to be a way to set up some type of network though. How sick would it be if we could play Gen games online with eachother? Someone with the know-how should get to work on this.

you will need the Delorean accessory to go with this if you want to make it work properly in 1997. I believe they were sold separately

Well, I've nearly completed my flux capacitor, but I still need the necessary fuel to generate 1.21 gigawatts.

Emulators already support netplay for all Genesis games.

Yeah. It'd be kinda cool to see how it would work though. I know it's still possible to go online with the DC (some people are hosting servers for games) last I checked about a year or two ago.

Guess the modem it's seen as more of a novelty item than something to experiment with.

The Saturn Netlink still works for Bomberman, but mainly since you can just call the other party instead of needing to connect to a central server. Don't try it with VOIP though, I've heard the quality sucks ass.

I bought this thing way back when right after the company folded for like $5. Played for it like for 5 mins and then put it away. All you can do is try to log on by dial up, once you can't it boots you. That's it. You can play with some sub menus but thats it.

I think the attempts to make XBand work have all been with internet play in mind. I wonder if it would be possible, though, to make the modem work as a direct connection as it originally did. For local phone calls, the modem would dial XBAnd's secret phone number. The XBand phone server would then dial your chosen opponent, make a conference call, then the XBand phone server would drop off, leaving you and your opponent directly connected without ever seeing each other's phone number. Maybe a programmable line simulator could work in place of the XBand phone server.

There are two "games" on the XBand cart: Rattle Bassin'!!! (aka "fish pong") and an unnamed maze game. They were mini-games that you could play while waiting to connect to an opponent. Neither are worth playing, though.
