Is this normal?

I have a Model 1 non-TMSS High Definition Graphics model Genesis. While playing Earthworm Jim I noticed vertical bars that go all the way from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. Most noticeable on black screens. Sorry for the quality of the pics. It's the best I could do. In the first one if you view the pic at an angle you can see some of the bars the best. They don't show up that well in pics.

I hear that if I use a 32X the bars will go away. Is this true? Also sorry for the flash in the first two pics.

My launch Genesis does the same thing, and the 32X fixes it.

Yes, that is an artifact of the less-than-perfect video encoder chip used in the Genesis. There are at least 3 different models of encoder used in the various Genesis revisions, plus the ones in the CDX and such. They all have their own quirks. The general opinion is that the Sony CXA1645M used in things like the V3/V4 MkII Genesis is the best.

Adding a 32X shifts the job of creating composite video to the 32x's encoder, and that does a better job than any stock Genesis so far as I'm aware.
