Default What to buy Sega CDX or Everdrive?

    Hey guys

I have a bit of pocket money set aside. I can either get a Sega CDX or Everdrive.

I am thinking Sega CDX as they are rare in Australia and compact. I already have a Sega MD1/Mega CD/32X and Sega MD2/Sega CD2/32X console. Both of these sets are region free. It would be different for me to mod a CDX as I haven't done one before.

I am thinking Everdrive, purely for my Nomad, have a bunch of games on the go..... I am thinking of getting a pre-done everdrive complete in case/box.

    What would you go for?

    Cheers Pete

Everdrive, without hesitation. While the CDX seems like a nifty item to have, the Everdrive + Nomad will allow you to play just about anything on the go. Best of all would be if your Nomad is modded for SMS compatibility. Plus you'll be able to try all the homebrews, rarities, newly dumped pirate ROMs, and so forth that are out there. It's 100% worth it, and Krikzz and his work are well worth supporting -- he's incredibly helpful and responsive.

I suppose if you already have an enormous collection the Everdrive is a bit less valuable, but still -- the ability to play anything, at any time, on real hardware is just terrific. And unlike the SNES Everdrive, where you could make a case that it's worth waiting for the SD2SNES, the upcoming super-high-end version of the Everdrive MD ("Mega Everdrive") isn't really something that's going to supersede the original.

From what you've stated in your opening post, I would go with the Everdrive. Sure the CDX is an uncommon console but in the end what will you gain except a console that will gather dust? goldenband makes some nice points: you'll get to experience a few games that you would never get to experience. If gaming is your passion, go with the Everdrive and resist that urge to be a collector/hoarder!
The fictional character Gordon Gekko once stated,"Greed, for lack of a better word, is good". Gekko is sometimes unfairly judged. There is a big difference between maintaining one's moral compass in business and that which operates in one's personal life. In business, the reality is that if you are not willing to crush your competitor, you might as well get out of the game while you're still ahead.

If you want a CDX and have a good deal in mind, get it. CDXs at a good deal can be hard to find, while the Everdrive will be there the next time you have money. The CDX won't.

True, if it's a CDX for $50 I'd grab it. If it's $150, get the Everdrive. If it's somewhere in between, consult your magic 8-ball.

CDX. I'd save up for that snazzy new Everdrive revision that's coming up some point soon regardless.

Damn I should of added a pole......

Anyway I tried to convert some smd files to bin with the smd to bin converter on Krikkz websire and I get a warning that the program has to close. The window comes up saying that it has converted the file and I see in the "read me" file that it keeps the .smd but has the .bin file inside.

I am using windows 7 and have tried in windows XP virtual PC. I also tried it on my other PC that has XP pro on it and get the same thing......

    Anyone seen this?

I use ucon64 to convert between the different rom layouts. Of course, the Neo Myth doesn't have that trouble since it converts from SMD to bin on the fly when loading from SD card.

I'm a bit surprised that KRIKzz still hasn't added a few things like that. Loading from an SMD file (with or without header) is pretty damn easy. You just need 32KB of ram free at that point - two 16KB buffers to interlace the data (SMD is two 8KB blocks of deinterlaced bytes). Well, 32KB to make it easy. He COULD always just use 16KB and interlace on the fly as he writes the flash.

I think I will go for the Everdrive at this stage. To get a CDX for a reasonable price would be a fluke. I think I will get one from the stone age gamer as he seems to have the nicest looking setup.
