No way to tell without dumping.. I'm not sure of what the fixes are, but being that all 9306 consoles die with CD issues, I'd say it doesn't matter anyway..

Customized Sega Genesis Model 1 - VA3
I've got 5 model 1's to report. All are US models.
A20079984 - September 1992 AL <670-2733 02>
G20013490 - September 1992 AS <670-2733 01>
G30048079 - September 1992 AL <670-2733 02>
G30030293 - September 1992 AL <670-2733 02>
G20019476 - September 1992 AL <670-2733 02>
Not sure what the difference is between the AS and the AL models. The 670 # is different by 1 digit as well. The beginning letter of the serial # doesn't seem to make any difference. The AL is clearly the more common one.
All of them work and/or have been repaired by me, except for 1 of them which I use for parts.
I never realized until reading this thread that all of the model 1's were made in the same month. I knew they were rare, but I didn't know that the production run was so limited. Edit - after reading through the entire thread I now realize that they used the same sticker on all of them, regardless of when they were made. Interesting stuff.
I should have got the serial numbers from my CDX and X'Eye before I sold them. I might be able to dig up some photos of them but can't guarantee.

Guntz, I didn't sell my model 1, I think you misunderstood my post.
What I meant was that oldskool beat me to owning the newest model 1.

Thanks for the entry, list updated.Real nice picture there, almost looks stock-quality.
North American SCD 2 - T30087248 - June 1993.
A match made in heaven... Thats so beautiful. The Gen 2 and SCD2 combo is truly underrated. Yours looks amazing! It makes me want to post a decent picture of my HDG SCD1 combo. Though my genesis and sega CD arent in nearly as nice of a condition as yours are.
Also, has anybody noticed slight differences in plastic colors on sega genesis and sega CD Systems? My sega cd is slightly lighter than my genesis. For some reason.
In all honesty I think the Model 2 Genesis with Model 2 Sega CD is one of the sharpest looking consoles there is. Even with the 32X it still looks great. I really don't get why people say the Model 2 Sega systems look bad. They have nice smooth lines and compliment each other nicely.
It just pales in comparison to the spiffy looks of the model 1. The first Genesis had a much better presentation and personality. You had the red highlights, led, "high def gfx", 16-bit, and the sega genesis logo at the forefront.
Even the AVGN with his Nintendo bias couldn't deny that it was a sexy beast.
Model 2 looks bland by comparison. Just a little black, boxey thing, and the Genesis logo is obscured when a cart is in the slot.
And the model 3 would be pretty neat but the gaudy "3" on it distracts from things.

While the Model 1 is nice, I prefer the look of the Model 2 personally. The Model 1 just feels a bit too much like an 80's piece of stereo equipment. The Model 2 feels like a game console. I also prefer rounded edges as opposed to boxy ones. Its the same reason I prefer the Model 2 SNES, Model 2 Saturn, The AV Famicom, the Model 2 SMS, etc.
For the longest, I too have preferred the Model 2's appearance, though I've come to appreciate the Model 1 as well. It's pretty cool seeing a disc tray eject out from underneath the Genesis. That and getting to close it with the start button on the controller is futuristic-feeling. Both CD models look great in their own way and visually match well with their intended Genesis models.
Also, list updated.
