You gotta look deeper, though. Here are some points to consider:-

-Enemies in cool spot are lame as hell; realistic looking robots, flies, and crabs. Really?
-The main character is lame as hell, with no charisma or personality. Just a stupid dot that snaps his fingers.
    -The stages are poorly designed.

To sum it up, Cool Spot's universe is shit when compared to Mario and Sonic. Very unimaginative and generic locations.

How are robots and crabs any less cool than the robots or robot crabs in Sonic? Or the turtles or goombas in Mario. The same can be said of the main character. How exactly is an obese plumber a cool game character? I hear what you're saying, you don't like Cool Spot, but that whole argument is really just your personal preference. The only real downside I see to Cool Spot is the that the levels kinda repeat, sort of.

It has something to do with the element of surprise: who'd expect to enjoy a product mascot game? (MegaMan fans I suppose, he looks like some vaginal ointment applicator). Pleasant surprises are as badly needed in the video game world as in the rest of it. That being said I wasn't at all surprised by it outside of the slightly above avg graphics. Definitely boring.
The generic enemies are a product of their generic landscapes. I'm not sure what the thinking was behind the general beach adventure theme--I'm probably missing something in line with 7UP's standard campaign--but it certainly didn't further imagination. What would've made more sense is Cool Spot being detached from his bottle at various places one normally drinks cola such as a poolside, an arcade, a restaurant, cinema house, and so on, with their independent environments and corresponding enemies/obstacles. As it stands, yeah, it's just stuff on a beach--fine for a level or 2 but not cohesive enough for a whole game. (And if there is variety later on there wasn't enough earlier to make me stick around to see it).
What's queer is that this game is so much better regarded than Spot Goes to Hollywood which is at least thematic; of course the iso aspect turns many people off.
Then there's the NES game, something twixt draughts and Othello.
