I enjoyed this piece but i have a difference of opinion. Although it is easy to criticize game developers and console manufacturers for charging for online passes, on-disc bonus content, and pre-order bonuses, the blame lies squarely on our shoulders. After all, if there was no market for the additional content provided, the game developers and manufacturers would not invest time and money in this market strategy.

As consumers, we should not forget that our dimes and nickels (and dollar notes) speak volumes. And rather than always buying the latest and greatest games, we should fight that impulse. You cannot forget that you, as a consumer, possess the purchasing power to change the current dynamics.
The fictional character Gordon Gekko once stated,"Greed, for lack of a better word, is good". Gekko is sometimes unfairly judged. There is a big difference between maintaining one's moral compass in business and that which operates in one's personal life. In business, the reality is that if you are not willing to crush your competitor, you might as well get out of the game while you're still ahead.

Has anybody else read dude's comment at the bottom yet?

As a game geveloper myself currently working on a AAA title for Eidos/Square Enix (that will come out this year, wink! wink!) I can only agree with your article.
I lol'd. I'm glad someone is (wink! wink!).

I believe I've figured out the identity of the person who posted that comment and also the triple A title that the person hinted at. I'm not certain if it was wise to divulge so much information about himself. Anonymity sometimes is a beautiful thing.

With the price of DLC for up to $60 for one game, the same price can get you a rarer Genesis title. Value of money is the biggest problem I have with this gen.

Great article, especially for those that are still pretty old school at heart - you have the console, you have the disc, insert disc, play game.

Some time ago, Capcom released the original Final Fight arcade (alongside Magic Sword) as a downloadable purchase for PSN, and for some inexplicable reason, it doesn't allow you to play if you're not online. You paid for the game, its stored in your hard disc, and if for some reason you're not online (not because of connection problems, but because you don't want to be online, all the time, simple as that), you are not allowed to play it... This kind of stuff makes MAME popular
