    Post I'm recapping my 32X

Hey guys, i decided i would go ahead and recap my 32X—which has really bad audio backround noise and hissing and stuff coming from the console, not to mention video distortion. This will be my first recap job and if all goes well I'll recap my model 1 genesis. I have very little experience with repairing electronics, however my old man has some know-how from servicing computers replacing parts from when he was in the US navy during the 80s. Wish me luck!

Good luck. Just make sure you know the right heat to use on the soldering iron so as not to lift any of the pads off the board. These surface mount caps are a nightmare.

Do you have a list of the surface mounted ones?

All of the caps will be surface mount I think. You will probably have to replace them with electrolytic capacitors, which have prongs on the bottom intended to go through the board. The surface mounts just mount on the surface. The biggest problem I have run into is properly heating them to remove them without pulling the pads off the board too. Without the pads, you will have to use an knife to dig into the board to find something for the solder to stick to. It's a ton of work without the proper tools.

I only have a list of capacitors for the Game Gear, I haven't seen one for the 32X, but I also haven't found any guides that recommended replacing them all.

I have my 32X open in front of me, i'm pretty sure all the caps are electrolyric, there are 18 in all.

    10v 100µF x3
    50v 1µF x2
    16v 220µF x2
    10v 47µF x6
    16v 10µF x3
    10v 470 µF x1
And a purple SANYO capacitor that just says 100/10, not sure how to identify it.

If I were going to go through this repair, I would ask the folks over at NFG forums first. I would bet that some of them already have full schematics and can narrow down which caps to replace first for your issue. I personally never repair anything without a guide unless it is similar to something I have fixed before.

I've also never heard of a 32X needing a cap replacement. Granted I've also never needed to recap a Model 1 Genesis so YMMV. Good luck and make sure to take lots of before and after pictures.
