YouTube Big Forest with the prototype

(I posted this earlier then saw this thread and thought it might be better here.)

I have been looking at possibly buying a model 2 and another 32X for travel. I got to try out one earlier today and got to make a couple of runs on Virtua Racing Deluxe while I was at it. I've never posted a video on Youtube before so I had to figure out how to do that today, too; sorry about the video quality but all I have is my mobile. I haven't actually played Deluxe in maybe a year or so but I play the the Genesis version on my Nomad all the time. I took some turns wider than I usually do, guess I'm out of practice. I had kind of forgotten just how fast the prototype is and I love it!

No excuses for the controller but it was an old generic 3-button pad. The d-pad was actually in good shape, worn in so not too stiff or anything and worked very well for me. But the C-button barely worked making VR changes nearly impossible! I prefer VR1 and had a devil of a time getting it to switch views.

My first run was very rough, even spun out once but got it back together to take the trophy:

My second run was more consistent. I think I used to turn a time less than 3'10" with this car. I'm sure with a little practice I could shorten some of those bad turns that I made and reduce my time.

^ That doesn't look bad at all for screen capture video. I definitely don't seem to have the skillz some of you have either.

These videos turned out quite well...im curious, how you recorded them? Did you use an emulator or a video capture card?

Thanks for the comments. I played this on a Genesis Model 2 with 32X that I am considering buying. I don't have a video capture card. My computer is a Windows Mobile device with a 2.0 megapixiel camera. I just pointed the camera at the screen during the replays. Low-tech but it worked!

I don't have an emulator. I think there are a few for Windows Mobile but I don't have a Retrode yet to play my carts. I think 32X games would work if the cart slot on the Retrode was bigger. I have USB ports on a Windows terminal that works with my mobile so if I understand correctly how the Retrode works, I should be able to use it.

I was talking to someone about the differences between Virtua Racing Genesis and 32X. I know the original car can do 328 and the prototype can do 381 (higher for both if you draft). But I could not remember the stock car's top speed for sure and can't check until I get my hands on a 32X again. I'm guessing it's 286 but I'm not totally sure.

We were discussing how accurately the game represents those speeds, too. I wouldn't know how to determine it but maybe one of you frame-rate jockeys or technical types could calculate it somehow. It seems faster than I've ever driven in real life but I've never driven those kinds of speeds. I used to have a Toyota Celica and did 220 once, though that was the downhill side of a mountain pass. I've done 180 in my Toyota Matrix and have the speeding ticket to prove it! But I've never even driven a car capable of Virtua Racing speeds.

Judging from newer simulations like Test Drive Le Mans and Forza 3, I'd say that Virtua Racing handles the speed fairly accurately. I only get near 300 MPH on the Le Mans track without chicanes and the speed seems pretty close to the same on Virtua Racing. This is a Yu Suzuki game we're talking about after all, everything he ever made was intended to be a simulation, and he said in a recent interview that he wrote all of his game engines and did all of the math fully in 3D and then down ported that to whatever hardware he had designed to run his game.

    300 mph or 300 km/h?

I was thinking in Miles Per Hour, and comparing it to Test Drive Le Mans and the racing class vehicles in Forza 3. The only games I've played in KPH were older psuedo 3D types that definitely were not aiming for realism. 300 Miles per hour is very very fast, my buddy and I usually screw up in the Le Mans track at over 260 MPH.

Well, sure, 300 mph is almost 500 km/h, isn't it? I mean, the Virtua Racing prototype only does 381 km/h. And I say "only" but 381 is really fast! What game system is that for?
