I'd probably try a 1 to 2 liter bottled water container. After you get it cut and shaped right, then paint it black.
Why even bother? Is the small gap between the two that unsightly?
You're not under the impression that you need a spacer, are you? 'Cause you definitely don't.
The 32x really wobbles about on top so I assume it does. I imagine it will put excess pressure on the Mega Drive cart slot when it wobbles
*bump* making a spacer is probably a really good idea. When modding my systems I had the 32x sitting in the genesis pcb with the top half of my genesis case removed....man that thing liked to lean all over the place. It's also bad for your cartridge slot pins to not have the 32x be completely perpendicular at all times considering how heavy the 32x is. You'd bend all your genesis cartridge pins if you didn't have something keeping the 32x in its proper place. Great example of pins getting bent out of shape to the point where they stop working properly: the NES ZIF cartridge system.
i replaced the 72 Pin ZIF Connector on my NES and have had no problems since.
As for the spacer, why make one? You can find them on eBay or amazon for less than $10, or less than $5 if you look hard enough
Also, does anyone here use the metal clips to hold the Genesis cartridge flaps open?
I might have a spacer you can have, ill check when i get home
I use the hooks because I found that it creates a tighter connection which led to a better signal.
a better signal from what....to what?
Ive also heard they were necessary to get some sort of electronics certification, or something, from the US government.. I have no idea if thats true or not.
I would recommend using the plastic spacer, or equalent homemade thingymajig, since like others have mentioned it keeps the connection flush, and stops the 32x from rocking and bending when you insert and remove game cartridges. Unecessary leverage compared to just a genesis cart being manipulated.
Thank you grimm! My comment was mean't to say what grimm just posted. It makes the connection flush and keeps the 32X from rocking. I get a better picture with that setup than letting the trains shake my 32X when they go by.
Great you guys probably have me on a Govt. watch list.
Bringing this topic back up.
I recently bought a Gen2 and a 32X. The 32x did not come with the spacer. I understand that it's a silly thing to have, but the 32X does rock a bit whenever I'm changing games. I COULD buy one on eBay or amazon, but I like DIY stuff. My idea is really simple and should be cheap. Dense foam. Not the crumbly stuff that packages are filled with, but the kind a kid would use to make a solar system diorama. I'm going to drop by one of those craft stores tomorrow and see what they got. The material is totally manipulable too. So I don't see why it wouldn't work. Hell, they may even sell it in black. I'll post my findings.
