Does anyone know if this version of the game has battery save and whether that function would work on the everdrive?

It has an FRAM chip, which doesn't need a battery. If Sonic 3 saves properly on the Everdrive, then JP VRD 32X will as well.
I think I may just buy the cart. I have a 32x (US) Mega Drive (EU) and want to run Virtua Racing (Jap). Can this all work with modifications? If so what is required?
You could have just scrolled down and clicked on this thread.

But I suppose while I'm at it, you'll have to region mod your Genesis so it can play in JP mode. It seems the 32X has only two modes, PAL and NTSC, so it will be fine unmodded. Here's a couple guides for both the Genesis Model 1 and 2:

Hey wow, saves for the Japanese version of Virtua Racing Deluxe is an awesome addition, I wonder what else they changed. I'll try to see if it works on my Everdrive without modification at my next opportunity. That might actually encourage me to get back to first place in each track and with each car.
It's pretty much the same game, but some of the voices are different. They say the same things, but the Japanese voices are kinda weird. It's worth checking out!
I've been halfheartedly looking for a Jap Virtua Racing 32x for a while, but it's not that big of a deal to me and I don't have a region modded system, but I could do the mod easily enough.

JP MD VR? As in, not the 32X version? No, it still doesn't work on the 32X. Virtua Racing Deluxe probably does work on any 32X though, since there doesn't seem to be such a thing as a JP/US mode.
I seem to recall that the backup was mentioned in the UK Sega Magazine's review of VR Deluxe, which suggests that it was originally intended to be present in the European version too. So yeah, I agree that it probably was cost cutting. The menu graphics differences and extra option in the Japanese version are a bit weird though, seeing as all versions were released at the same time.
I think the Japanese version was released slightly after the Western releases of V.R. Deluxe, but yeah, not enough of a gap to explain why they got saving and we didn't, I think. It's definitely very, very frustrating, the game is great, but would be so much better with saving... there's no championship or anything, only single races, and without time saving it feels kind of pointless, as good as it is.
I guess I misread that post. It wouldn't make sense to me if it did work, but I thought that is what was said. My bad for reading stuff when I was half asleep.
I could have just checked my copy of JP MD VR on a US 32X, but.... to lazy!!! If I play VR, I'd much rather play my 32X version instead.
Is there a game genie code for the Japanese version to work on a US console?
The smell of scorched oil hangs in the air as a premonition of danger, while the engine gloriously shouts its war cry...
Throughout history, suspicion has always bred conflict. The real conflict, though, resides in people's hearts. This conflict has just begun.

I'm thinking possibly no. The Genesis determines the JP/US region of the overall system, not the 32X (50/60Hz is another matter entirely). I'm not sure if modifying code in the VRD code could make it work on a US 32X... Maybe someone ask Tony H if he's already tried to make a code for JP VRD?
