YouTube YM2612 playing 8-Bit PCM at 44.1 khz!

This is a short video about a finding made by Matthiew Demange about the DAC channel on the YM2612.
Apparently you can stream PCM at such high sampling rate, but the 2612 needs to be overclocked from its usual 7.67 to a higher 8.8 Mhz Clock.

Time to shut up and let the music begin!:

I think even at this clock the YM is still missing quite a lot of writes. I can shoot 480000 bytes per seconds at the YM (68k won't go any faster) but it actually only gets a small percentage of these writes =P

I don't see what the fuss is all about. It's not a stock machine (the chip is oveclocked). Hell, it's not even the console itself (chip removed).

At 8.8MHz it would only receive around 30000 writes/sec

What everyone else has already said.
If someone wants to make something impressive make a Technosoft caliber FM driver with 2 channel PCM (variable pitch).
    Now that would be awesome.

For me it is clear... any sample playback that cannot run aside the game code is pretty much useless as Sega is the GAMING device... if this can be used to enhance the video games by high resolution voices (clear sounding dialogues), various effects and such, multichannel if possible, then I will say whow... but the simple samples playback where device has to go to screen off mode and nobody allowed to touch it... not the real deal really...

Feels like it isn't clear enough for you... Sega is a company not a "gaming device".

^You forget that many Sega outsiders refer to any Sega-made console as simply "a Sega", even fellow gamers on Nintendo and Atari platforms. It's a horrible stereotype, but it's a lot more common than people calling a Nintendo system as just "a Nintendo".

What about those that call any type of video game console "a Nintendo"?

Even though this seems to not be applicable to the genesis I still think it's cool. It's always fun seeing what you can do with hardware.
