Question Is street fighter II the best sequel EVER?

I like the first street fighter, the game has his own charm its one of those games (in my opinion) that falls in the category of it's so bad that is so good.. but with sf2 the improvement was amazing... easily beats the original.. and for me is the best sequel EVER.
too old for video games huh?

Well, I don't know if it's the best sequel ever, but it was certainly a big improvement over the first Street Fighter.

I can't think of many other games that are terrible in their first installment, and groundbreaking in the second.

I wouldn't say Mega Man 1 is terrible, it's still a really good game.

How about the jump from Mario Bros to Super Mario Bros? Sure, the original wasn't bad, but the sequel is so much more. So, so much more. And it was more groundbreaking than SF2, with longer lasting, and broader effects.

I think Pitfall II // Super Pitfall had already done what Super Mario Bros did, just in a different way. Street Fighter II definitely managed to make crazy controller motions into moves in a 2D fighting game acceptable, by Yie Ar Kung Fu did it first but just didn't get the recognition. Budoken took that concept and really ran with it down a road most gamers would not follow.

My honest first impression of Street Fighter II in the Arcades was that it wanted me to waste too many quarters learning moves (the moves were discovery only, not written anywhere). I thought that was a sleazy move and stayed away until a couple of my buddies were willing to show me how to play it.

street fighter II was good and a big improvement over the first. on the other hand it's also very overrated and probably the most milked fighter of all time.

I say that because of all the variations of sf II released with just slight tweaks to the gameplay and the constant amount of times it's been re-released for other systems and compilations.

Pitfall and Pitfall 2 did not do what SMB did. It was a platformer, but that's like saying all platformers are alike. Aside from being able to jump over obsticals and slowly moving enemies, and the ability to scroll in pitfall 2, they share nothing that makes SMB different from any platformer that came before it.

Just like there were fighting games prior to SF2, but all fighting games after took it's conventions, the same happened with SMB. there were platformers prior to it's inception, but they were crude and many of the conventions it brought to the table are now staples of the genre.

I'm leaning towards SF2 but Waverace (Game Boy) to Waverace 64 was a huge jump as was Elevator Action to Elevator Action Returns.

Megaman 2, Ys 2, Street Fighter 2, Resident Evil 2, Sonic 2, Super Mario Bros, Shining Force 2, Dracula X:SOTN, NHL 94, Dragon View, Virtua Fighter 2, Defender 2.

    I give up.

Wave Race for Game Boy is a good game, though. I can think of others like that, sequels to good games that got even better and are all-time classics above and beyond their predecessors, such as Civilization II and SimCity 2000, but games which are sequels to bad games, but are great? That is harder to find. Another one like that, though not quite on Civ II or SC2k's level (but close), would be Worms 2; the first Worms was pretty good, but it's Worms 2 that has been the template for every single 2d Worms game released after it. Indeed, every 2d Worms game since Worms 2 has essentially just been a Worms 2 remake with slightly altered graphics...

Super Mario Bros. is a good one, really, though. The first Mario Bros. is okay, I guess, but isn't anything too amazing. It was certainly no sign of what would happen next. However, Mario had previously starred in Donkey Kong too, so is SMB really the second game?

Donkey Kong is its own series, which still continues today in the DK vs Mario games. The Mario line is a spinoff. Mario Bros was the first game in the spinoff, and Super Mario Bros was the sequel. Donkey Kong continued along separately from Mario, and the character Donkey Kong got his own spinoff separate from the original series, Donkey Kong Country.

It's a good contest between SF/SFII and MB/SMB. What SFII brought was more innovative than what SMB did (had the physics caught on it might be the other way round) but SMB is the bigger leap over its own sequel.

Turtles II (Arcade) is not only better than the first but established how the series would be handled (brawler rather than unfair platformer) along with a very high level quality. --- that said the first is still very...intriguing. The character change-out is cool too.

Final Fantasy IV. At the time, we knew it as Final Fantasy II, and it blew away its predecessor. Even considering the "real" II and III, IV was a massive improvement IMO.
