I actually meant to ask that yesterday as well, my Saturn was freaking out and would only read discs like CDs at one point as well. Turned out the solder on the joints for the modchip had cracked and that was causing the problem.

Since you've got it open, try taping the door sensor closed and putting in a game and playing for awhile with the lid off. If you see it trying to struggle to move the laser on the rails and freezing while playing then you probably just need to relube the rails like other mentioned. Make sure to get the silicon grease like others mentioned, don't use WD40.

I didn’t want to start a new thread so jumped on this one. Got a decent deal on a Saturn on the weekend from local person so no postage with a bundle of games. The advertisement said that a couple of games would not load so I guess something wrong with the laser so after reading a few other posts I went for it. Most of the games loaded but crashed after a few minutes, or during a load phase, and few with no luck. I’ve done the following but is there anymore I could do:

    1. Cleaned the laser lens
    2. Cleaned and greased the gears with silicon grease, had a bit of dirt and seems to run smoothly now
    3. Taped up the door open sensor so can play with cover off
    4. Adjusted the laser bios (orange screw)
    5. Tried lifting the spindle

Now most games load and can play without crashing but a couple will still not load, goes to black screen after getting through the region check (I think), with the top off. I also read that adjusting the laser bios is very temporary fix is it time for a new laser?
