For maximum schlock, I always play as Vision.
The SNES version looks a little better but the controls are so botched the game is near unplayble. You'll be breaking the controller in frustration by the third screen.

There is also a version for the NES that is a completely different game. That one is a pretty cool sidescroller similar to the GI Joe game.

I'm surprised the current owners of the Data East library didn't work out some deal with Marvel to release the arcade version on Xbox Live/PSN to coincide with the film since no other video game tie-in is available.

Wow, my brother and I beat that version together several times...I guess we just had a high threshold for slow, lousy controls after some of the NES games we'd played. Don't get me started on Track & Field.

Really? No one took that bait? Aquaman is DC. Submariner is Marvel.

The Captain America and the Avengers Genesis port is weird for me. Back in the day i loved the arcade, perhaps a little too much lol. When i saw the Genesis version i snapped it up and took it home and....wow i was not happy.

Was quite disappointed that it didn't come close in graphics & audio to the Arcade version. Especially when i saw other Genesis games that looked nicer.

Fast-forward many years later and now i actually enjoy the game. It does not approach the greatness of the original, but i appreciate the work Data East put into it keeping about 60% of the game intact. That missing 40% hurts and they could have done much better with the hardware, but whats there is still a fun beat'em up and respectable conversion effort in its own right.

I also liked how the majority of the voice clips made it over! Even if they are low quality.

Overall, an excellent title in the beat'em up library.

I disagree. I'd put the Captain America and the Avengers Arcade on-par with Konami's X-Men. Its their only stellar title but it shows what they could do.

    Then there is:

    Two Crude Dudes
    Desert Assault
    Robocop Arcade
    Dark Seal I & II
    NightSlashers
    Vapor Trail
    Neo Geo's SpinMaster
    Bad Dudes
    Among others....

Not the best game company out there but they've made some good stuff.

Data East was the main competitor of Capcom, in the falling 80's years and 90's debut.
Remember the famous trial story about Fighter's history and Street Fighter II.

Agreed, Data East was pretty strong in the arcade scene. Unfortunately their home ports often suffered in translation.

Plenty of Avengers carts on e-bay.

And Two Crude Dudes is a beat'em up classic! It wasn't as graphically intense as Avengers, so Data East was able to make a faithful port on the small carts allowed. Though i wonder why larger carts(16-Megabit and up) weren't more widespread. Didn't think the games would sell enough to justify more expensive carts?

Just another reason Disc based games > Cartridge format.

Data East made the AMAZING Boogie Wings. This game is criminally underrated. One of my favorite games ever, and a total joy to play (especially 2 player). I think Joe should check this one out for the next Left in the Arcade episode of Gamesack.

I recommend you all go play that on your MAME cabs right now. You all have MAME cabs, right?

Load times suck elephant balls, especially on early to mid-90s hardware.
Sure, you can take away cartridges...FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!

Data East also had some of the best FM music out there. I wish I knew more about their composers.
