Sonic SONIC1.... stood the test of time?

one of the best games on the genesis, and the sonic that started it all... in your opinion the game stood the test of time? I think that even today the game looks great sure the game play is "simple" (no spin dash, and those cool power ups like sonic 3) but the music is awesome and the graphics too!
too old for video games huh?

I think all the classic 2D Sonic games stand up pretty well. Sonic 1, 2, 3, s&k, and Sonic CD all look and sound pretty good given the technology of the day, and are certainly not offensive to see or hear.

The opinions on game play specifics in any of the games may vary of course, but I think they are all reasonably fun and competent platformers at a minimum.

Absolutely it stood the test of time. They keep trying to recreate that Sonic feeling and no one ever captures it.

I think most Sonic games look prettier than a lot of games of their time (even if a lot of them aren't actually much fun to play :P)

When I think about playing Sonic I tend to think more fondly of Sonic 1 than the other games. I like the level designs and music the best in Sonic 1, there's something tranquil about it that Sonic 2 replaced with frenetic speed. I really like Sonic 2 also, but Sonic 1 is a game that holds up very well on its own.

I think that is due to design choices made. They knew the limitations of the system and made games that played to the strengths and hid the weaknesses. Games like the previously mentioned Altered Beast were not bad for the day, but were arcade converts, not made directly for the Genesis.

A well designed game can look great years or decades later on its own, and that will always hold true so long as there are ways to keep playing them.

The more time passes, the less I enjoy traditional 2D Sonic games. But the original hasn't aged at all for me.

Words cannot describe the feeling I get when I go back to play the original Sonic. A part of my knows its the mixed emotions nostalgia brings, it was the first game I ever played.

But I don't think it would have had such an incredible impact on where it not for the amazing art direction and 'that' soundtrack. Forgive me for my pretensions but the original Sonic the Hedgehog is true pop art, more so than any game of that era. Thats why when I see the horrible convoluted mess that the franchise is now, I look back at the original and don't understand how Sonic lost its complete and unique singular style. Sonic for me has never been horrible turgid American Rawk music, or self-consciously urban 'cool' posturing dictated by focus grouping video games.

The original was brazenly Japanese, and it fits in with a certain time period when Japan was at the top of its game in Pop culture, where Japan now seems to be floundering and directionless.

I sometimes wish Sega wouldn't pander to the lowest common denominator these days in many of its titles art direction and style. Sonic now stands as a testament for how to completly lose the 'feel' of a franchise, gameplay notwithstanding (recent Sonic titles have been a lot more playable and polished), Sonic does little for me aesthetically now.

The minute Sonic 2 came out, gameplay wise, Sonic 1 became completely inconsequential. By the time Sonic & Knuckles came out, without the ability to return to the first game, Sonic 1 became 100% obsolete.

It's still a great and beautiful platformer on its own. But that's it. I don't care about the other power-ups, but without the spindash, Sonic just feels handicapped.

I kinda feel this way since I actually played Sonic 2 before Sonic 1. Sonic 2 was my pack-in game. Back in the day when I first played Sonic 1, I was like "where's the spin dash?" I got over it though.

I replayed Sonic 1 again a couple months ago and was still looking for the spin dash attack for the first minute. Spin Dash aside, it's still a great game today and I enjoyed playing it after all these years.

Sonic 2 was way better, Sonic 1 does not stand the test of time at all. If you want to talk platformers that stood the test of time, talk Rayman on any console. Sonic 1 one was never that amazing, and this is coming from someone who has no nostalgia for any Sonic Genesis games so I have a more fair judge of which is better.

I still think Sonic 1 is better then Sonic 2 and by far better then Sonic CD. They are all great games that have easily stood the test of time. Sonic 3 and Knuckles has become my 2nd favorite Genesis game ever after Streets of Rage 2.

    - Labyrinth Zone is sweet... Marble Zone is sweet (not everything needs to be hold right ftw)

In my Sonic 1 vs Sonic 2 comparison

Green Hill vs. Emerald Hill (Green Hill wins)
Spring Yard vs. Casino Night (Spring Yard wins) - My favorite zone is Sonic 1 but they are all sweet
Scrap Brain vs. Metropolis (Scrap Brain wins)

Sonic 2 favorite zones Chemical Plant Zone (music and speed), Aquatic Ruins (to short for a 2 act zone though, my favorite looking zone), Mystic Cave zone (could be a tad bit longer, not pathetically short like Aquatic Ruin. Very unique and good music), Oil Ocean (Pretty much the ideal length for 2 act zones)

Absolutely. Wonderful game. Labyrinth Zone is still a bit dull too so nothing's changed at all. The best parts are Green Hill, Starlight, and Tails's absence.
By the way one must be abysmal at this game to miss the spin dash.
