Sonic The Hedgehog on Genesis embodies Sega's great development philosophy of "easy to pick up and play, rewarding to master." Sonic isn't a hard game by any means, the ring system takes care of that. Getting the lowest times, and completing the levels with all monitors broken and all of the rings is extremely challenging and rewarding. But just playing through Sonic is a breeze, almost anybody can do it and just remember to pick up rings when they get hit.
Sonic is way better on the Genesis unless you play the Game Gear version first. That will make you a Sonic hater faster than a tick on a hounddog.
Do you find it difficult, or would boring and/or monotonous (I had to look up the spelling!) be a better word? I mean, do you keep dying in Sonic1 or something? The hardest part, IMO, is the Labyrinth Zone boss. I CAN understand if you find it boring/monotonous. Difficult? In all honestly, my 2 year old daughter get pass level 1 (literally, she actually can). Why's it so hard to believe that I find the difficulty in sonic 1 to be too hard to get enjoyment from the game? This thread is directly asking "do you think sonic 1 stood the test of time?" and I don't think it did because the game's too difficult to bother with. Also the marble zone feels way too slow and very un-sonic-like.
Out of curiosity; if you really do find it difficult, what is hard about it? I honestly want to know.
Someone has to fill that role. Well, maybe not "has to," but I'm doing it anyway. I'll try to play nice.Eh, I don't know... I just read this thread from beginning to end, and I must admit that Breetai did a pretty decent job establishing himself as insufferably arrogant long before the sixth page. So cut Star Wolf some slack, huh?
It didn't. It looks and feels like a pale shadow of Sonic 2 - which actually does stand the test of time. The music is less memorable, the levels are less unique and there's less speed.
Sonic 1 isn't too boring but it's not entertaining enough to warrent the difficulty level. I beat a lot of difficult stuff as a kid but sonic 1 never felt like it was worth the effort to me. If sonic 1 was easier or had an adjustable difficulty level I'd enjoy it a lot more.
The music in sonic 1 isn't bad at all. Sonic 3 and knuckles I find the music just as good as sonic 1. Sure sonic 2 has better music but sonic 2 has one of the best soundtracks of all time. I actually think one of the best parts of sonic 1 (besides the purdy graphics) is the music. The slow speed I can forgive in sonic 1 I mean it was the first and it was a fairly new concept at the time. Adding the spin dash in sonic 2 was a huge leap no more having to wait forever for sonic to gain momentum.
I feel the same way about a lot of first games in various series. The first kirby isn't quite classic because they didn't give you the ability to absorb powers. The first zelda I never got into because.....I dunno..it just doesn't feel very immersive to me. The first mario bros you can't go left. The first metroid is a bit on the repetitive side due to hardware limitations. All these games were great ideas that weren't fully formed until the second or third incarnations, sometimes it was due to hardware limitations.

Sonic 1 isn't hard by any means. I think you've been playing another game all along... The only part that is actually hard is the Labyrinth Zone boss, because, at first, you don't really know how to beat it. Other than that, it is a quite easy game compared to Contra or shooters like Raiden Trad.
I think that the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis has stood the test of time quite well.
Here is another question: have you beaten Sonic 2 legitimately?
Sonic 1 is harder than Sonic 2 and S3K IMO but on its own it isn't THAT difficult. More traps and a higher number of spikes (along with the spike bug) it seems though. No doubt getting the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 1 is less fulfilling than the other Genesis installments.

Quiet calling it Sonic 1, Just Sonic
It's bugging me..
Anyhow, Yes Sonic is harder that Sonic 2...But I still love Sonic
