^Title. If one had the time, skill and money, could one do a reasonably good port of Metal Slug on a stock Genesis?

You'd need a custom cart considering how big the game is. That's the main thing the NeoGeo had going for it - HUGE carts.
Well its not like we never got cut up games back in the day, I mean look at Samurai Shodown (no earthquake), Fatal Fury (missing 2 chars and bg's) MKII (missing everything)
Still decent ports, so yeah I think a Metal Slug port could be done, just expect a lot of cuts and missing art, but it could still look decent.
If the Genesis can do a decent run 'n gun, then it can do a version of any run 'n gun. Even if the stage layout and enemy patterns had to be altered, the Genesis could do a game that looks and plays like a Metal Slug game.
Well it could do a more advanced version of the Neo Geo Pocket Metal Slug game.
the genesis could probably handle a scaled down port of the game, I think the 32x would do better at handling metal slug.
No only can do it, but it also can do it better, the Geo Neo is an overrated piece of junk.
I hate when people come into threads like these and say "oh use 32X, problem solved!"
yeah well.. we could also just make it for our quadcore mega super pc's, problem also solved.
When the 32X gets named it stops being about the Genesis for me.
As for Chilly Willies cart problem thing, simple solution, one they've always used.
CUT COMPLETE STAGES!
He did ask specifically for this on the MEGADRIVE, not 32X. That's why I said you'd need a big cart... you can't count on the CD or the 32X, so you have to edit the graphics for the MD video, and then either use a huge cart or edit the levels to fit existing carts.
Yeppers! That's my approach right now to a new version of Doom for the 32X - don't try to include the whole damn game in one cart image. My work in progress does an episode per cart. Then just use passwords or save ram to continue the game where it left off in the next cart with more of the game.As for Chilly Willies cart problem thing, simple solution, one they've always used.
CUT COMPLETE STAGES!
It's kinda the corollary to cutting stages - cut them out... then put them in another cart. I know you meant just cut them, period, but think about a series of Metal Slug carts... one cart per level with as much left in as possible in 4 MBytes of space.
I think the best idea here would be to just make Metal Slug MD, and just combine the best of all the Neo games into a sweet remix kinda thing.
Have like the Jungle stage from 5, with a boss from 3, make it its own thing.
I think the first Metal Slug game could be done some justice. Between the animation cuts, the music being toned down, more simplified backgrounds, and so forth, programmers could probably get most of the game in a 40Mb cart. Takara made a habit of doing surprisingly good ports of much bigger games Mb-wise, so with the right cuts in the right places, it could be a pretty good port.

Coming Up:TF3 Side by Side, Gods
Done: RDF Global Conflict
Sheesh people lighten up it's not that big of a deal that someone posted off topic. With todays technology I'm sure you could get some pretty whopping sized genesis carts produced so you could make a fairly complete port....missing a lot of animation frames.
