Default Your Favorite Mega Man game, all-time!

What's your favorite Mega Man game all-time? You can cross series, platforms, whatever. From the NES originals, to the X Series, Battle Network, Legends, Game Boy Games, 9 and 10, tell us your favorite Mega Man game and why!

I'm going to start with the oddball pick here, Mega Man V for Game Boy. Maybe it's because it was the first Mega Man game I ever bought, but there's something about this one that struck a chord with me where the other games didn't. The gameplay was great, the level choices were more linear and less "Which stage am I supposed to pick first?" kind of feeling, there were tons of weapons and power-ups, nice length, great graphics, great music, and it wasn't overly-difficult to the point where the game became frustrating and unfun, like say, Mega Man 1. Oh, and everything was original, unlike the earlier Mega Man games for Game Boy.

    Which game is your favorite?

I gotta say, I love Mega Man 8. The music and graphics are fantastic, and the Robot Masters are... INTERESTING to say the least. And the english voices are as FANTASTIC as the english cast of Bible Black. But those things have no bearing on the gameplay itself. I loved it, and I definitely enjoyed the upgrades you can give the Blue Bomber.

IV and V for GB are two of the best games ever in the franchise, yeah. I think III doesn't get enough appreciation, though... it isn't as good as IV or V, certainly, but it is actually a really good game as well.

Other than those two though, my other favorite is MM4 for the NES. As for newer stuff though, that's harder... MMX4's my favorite of that series, I think. I haven't played the Zero series, but ZX and ZX Advent are both good; not sure which I like more however. I like the improved usage of the touchscreen in Advent, but as far as level designs they're pretty close... As for 9 and 10, they're both pretty good, but I do like stuff like 4, IV, and V even more.

Of the Mega Man games I've played, my favorite is still the original NES release. The later games are more polished, but there's something pleasingly weird about the first one -- there are all kinds of oddities that got ironed out in the subsequent games. And I like the fact that it's unforgivingly difficult, though it's not as hard as people sometimes claim: it does have infinite continues, after all.

Otherwise, I suppose it'd be 2 or 3 for the NES, both of which I remember enjoying. I recently tried 7 for the SNES and was kinda grossed out by the immediate cutscene. I guess that's another reason I like Mega Man 1: none of the convoluted, otaku-pandering backstory that mars subsequent releases.

Well and always well be Mega Man X5 and not just because if it was one of the first games I ever played. I considered a PERFECT MegaMan game, with it's colorful graphics, amazing hardcore boss designs as well as lvls, great soundtrack, great gameplay and GREAT story.

It was the megaman game that truly got me into the megaman games.

When this came out, it was as if all prior Mega Man games finally reached a pinnacle. The later 2D games are great, too, but nothing properly compares to original X.

I don't think I can pick just one megaman game as my favorite, megaman has been one of my favorite game series since the early 90s. anyway here are my favorites from the megaman and megaman x series:

    megaman 5 for gameboy:
it was probably one of the most unique of the original megaman games and there was never really any other quite like it. I liked the unique designs of the robot masters, the unique levels and it had great music. the whole space theme just fit the game very well.

megaman battle & chase for playstation:
this was one game that I wanted very badly in the 90's after seeing a ad for it in egm. unfortunately it was never released in the us, I eventually got the jp version from a local game store around late 97 and just had a blast with the game. I enjoyed the fact that you could steal parts from the opponents you beat and customize your car to your own liking and the fact that you could play as other characters from the megaman series.

    megaman the power battles, arcade:
I really enjoyed this game and after seeing screenshots of it in a old issue of egm or gamefan I just had to play it. there was a local game store that had the actual arcade cab during the late 90s and early 2000s and i'd go there and play it several times a week. I enjoyed the fact that the game was basically one big boss rush with one boss fight after another and the first time you could team up with someone against a boss. it was also great fun being able to play as bass and protoman for once.

    megaman x for snes:
at the time this game was a huge step above the original series, when I first played this in 1994 I was very impressed with how fast paced the game was compared to the original series. I thought everything about it was awesome.

    megaman x2 for snes:
as much as I liked the original megaman x I feel like x2 was a step above it. it had a awesome ultimate armor design, great boss designs and great music. I also liked the multiple story options depending on weather or not you got zero's parts back or not.

    megaman x3 for snes:
for some reason this one has to be my favorite x game of all time. it took everything from the first two games and just expanded upon it in a huge way with a ton of upgrades for the max armor, the gold armor and the ability to use zero's saber was quite awesome and being able to play as zero for the first time was exciting. I really liked the art style in x3 and the music as well. i'm such a huge fan of x3 that i've bought it for every system over the years: snes, ss, ps, pc, ps2 (mmx collection).

x3 was the one game that I could never find to buy in the 90's, I saw it at toys r us once then never again but I rented it alot from 95-2001 and finally got the jp sega saturn version for christmas in 2002 and bought myself the snes version in 2005. the fact that I had to wait so long to actually own x3 just made it that much more satisfying to play, I could play it as much as I wanted without having to return it to a video rental store. also this has nothing to do with this topic but the manga adaptations for x-x3 were quite awesome and really expanded upon the stories for each game. anyway sorry for the long post, I have more favorite megaman games but I don't want to write a massive post since I could talk about megaman for hours.

I love the entire classic series, but 3,4, and 6 NES stand out for me. On the SNES Rockman and Forte is quite good, you get two characters to play as, each play quite differently.

On the GB front Mega Man 3-5 are all quite good (2 is understandably bad due to the music, gah), but 5 really showed Capcom put some effort into making it an original game.

I own Mega Man 1-10 and Rockman and Forte (and Battle and Chase Japan import), 1-6 in original form, 1-3 on Mega Drive (reproduction cart), Rockman 5 PSX (a find in the wild), MMAC PS2, Mega Man 8 PS1, Rockman 8 Saturn, Mega Man 7 SNES (and the forementioned R&F) and the last two releases on Wiiware. I'm not into the whole X series, but have started getting the urge to play the first 3 or 4 games for sure,

Uhh, megaman 2 for the nes. Before all the good boss themes had already been done. Best music, megaman also feels best to me on the nes. No silly upgrades for megaman besides gaining the bosses power. No charging mega buster (never liked that), no slide move, no wall jumping (wall jumping made the difficulty disappear). The cutscenes rule too. Megaman 2 pushed the nes to its limits.

if you want to try the first few mmx games I recommend the megaman x collection for ps2, it usually cost's under $20 these days and has x1-6 plus battle and chase on one disc.

Mega Man has always been one of my favorite franchises as well except for the Battle Network games that I don't have much interest in.

IV and V on Gameboy are definitely two of the best classic series games, period. I own them both in Rockman World form. V has been getting a lot more popular lately but IV doesn't quite get the respect it deserves because it doesn't have the original baddies that V does. It gave us the first item shop in the series and had little touches like a Mega Buster with recoil! The levels are solidly designed and challenging and the cut-scenes all look really, really good. My only complaint about IV and V is they suffer from quite a bit of slowdown in spots because they are really pushing the poor old Game Boy to its limits. Don't just ignore IV because of V, both of these games are must-plays.

2 and 3 on the NES have always been tied as my favorite classic games though. The second game was a labor of love by its designers and it really shows in the stellar final product. The third game was one of the most epic. It's much longer than the previous titles and introduces the slide, Rush and Protoman, all of which things that become a major part of gaming pop-culture history. It's also the last game before the charging Mega Buster kind of mucks things up. Mega Man 9 is also up there because of its superb weapons set. Honestly I love all of the classic games. I just can't get enough of the formula. Lucky for me there are so many games.

Mega Man X is my favorite game in the X series and what I would have to call my favorite game in the franchise overall. I agree that this is the absolute pinnacle of Mega Man. It's not the most challenging Mega Man game but it's one of the most wonderfully balanced. Damn near everything about this game is perfect and all the little details and polishes like the level changes and stuff you can do to the bosses with certain weapons is just a cherry on top of an already perfect experience. I wasn't jealous of a whole lot of games my friends had on their SNES's back in the day but of those few games I really wish I could've owned, Mega Man X was one of them. Not that this stopped me from playing it to death at their houses anyway. It's also the first SNES game I downloaded when I became aware of emulators. I love X2 through X5 as well and X8 is okay but I never felt any other game in the X series matched the first. The less I talk about X6 and X7 the better.

And while we're talking about Game Boy games, Xtreme 2 for the Game Boy Color was really good. The first Xtreme game was a little creaky though.

Mega Man Zero is probably the most consistent series probably owing to the fact that there's "only" four games. Each one is pretty unique and they're all really solid. The two ZX games are good as well and pretty overlooked.

As I haven't strayed from the classic series very much, I'll have to say my pick as favorite MegaMan game (at least for the classic series) is MegaMan 3. I would have chosen MegaMan 2, but I just love the things you could do in MegaMan 3 with Player 2's controller. That can't be done in MegaMan 2, but it's still a damn fine game and the first one I ever owned (also had the original MegaMan, but my first copy stopped working and I only got another one many years later).

I liked the Megaman Zero series on the GBA, especially the third game.
