Megadrive Heavy Unit: Mega Drive Special

With all the shooters that came to the Genesis in its first two years, it seems strange that some would be left behind. Kaneko's Heavy Unit was one shmup that missed the boat, most likely because it was seen as too generic compared to powerhouses such as Thunder Force III and Gaiares. Is it worth tracking down now? Head on over and read our full write up and see!

Heavy Unit was my first chance as a young boy to see how the other side lived there Megadrive loving lives. We picked this game boxed up cheap at a car boot in 95', had to file the sides down on the cart slot and pondered at the weird Japanese artwork and characters.

And then later sat and pondered how to play the feckin thing properly, man is this game unforgiving. Great music though. Though thats probably the nostalgia talking.

The best way to describe this shmup is that it's pretty looking but generic gameplay to the rest.

This is a weak one IMO. I'd never rate it over 4.
It has an overall unpolished feeling that I didn't find in other average games like Arrow Flash (a 5 or 6 game IMO).

It's another one of those shooters that when you lose your powerups you're pretty much fucked.

Don't know how I never got suckered into playing this one considering I'm usually sold on any shmup that gives me a transforming robot. Probably best I continue to stay away from it.

This game is not that bad. I like it.
