There are a lot of these "blank" character in Sonic 1 hacks out there. Some are better than other, while some are just downright weird. I've never seen them all in one place though. Time to do something about that.

Did I miss any? Also, it would be cool to know how many of these work on real hardware. I imagine most of them do, though I heard the Vector one doesn't. If someone with an everdrive wants to test them that would rule.

... someone should make a Sonic 1 X characters hack that has all these guys in it, or at least the decently playable ones (Sorry Motobug).

Yeah, there are a few palette changes, and there's the occasional layout tweak, but the game is still about 80-90% Sonic 1 if you ask me. Sonia in particular offers some interesting gameplay.

I love that hack, it's positively awesome. However it's hardly anything like Sonic 1, all the levels are different, level graphics are different, music, pretty much everything. It's so hacked that it's hardly recognizable as Sonic 1. It's like an altogether new game. I just wanted to keep this thread to basic character insertions into Sonic 1 where the game is basically unchanged with the exception of the character that you play as.

If by "a few palette changes" you mean "completely new and/or replaced artwork" and "occasional layout tweak" you mean "completely new and/or thoroughly tweaked layouts", then yeah, totally. The Labyrinth Zone hack is the only one I can think of with the original Sonic 1 layouts, and the Spring Yard hack is the only one I can recall that uses the original Sonic 1 art with a different palette. Saying it's still mostly Sonic 1 is like saying Sonic Megamix is still mostly Sonic 1. Unless you're thinking of an older release than I am, S Factor is very different from the original game.

Granted, I haven't played that One in quite a while, and before posting I had only had another glimpse of the Game in Action by watching a YouTube-Clip, which felt very familiar. Sorry if I was mistaken then.

I usually don't bother with hacks but I'm definitely playing the Motobug one.

That motobug one is just silly. The game isn't particularly playable as him, but some of those other hacks, like the Amy or Sally ones really change the gameplay from the standard Sonic fare. Amy is armed with a giant hammer that she uses to kill enemies, as opposed to spindash/jumping on them, while Sally fires a laser from her little PDA thing.
