You need to add a line to system.ini file to get things work with 1GB or more of RAM, it will limit RAM to 1GB however. you can buy a patch for 20usd that will allow up to 4GB of RAM to be used, and also allows machine to work with too large registry and when there's gigabit LAN cards in use.
Drivers are first to be installed, and DX9 mostly too as some GFX drivers require it. Then you can start thinking about updates and such. KernelEx is the very last thing to be installed, it can cause various things to fail that normally wouldn't when installing them. .NET is one for example.
