Default Is this an unknown prototype Mega/Sega CD game?

It's a Mega CD-R with the word "Plopula" on it. Anyone know anything about this? Apparently the seller tried to put it in his computer and it just ejected, and doesn't have real hardware to test it on. Maybe it's Populous miss-spelled? Was Populous ever planned for the Sega CD?

I think that the seller either knows or believes that it doesn't have anything special on it, game or otherwise. It is easy enough to try out the disc if you're going to ask such a high amount of money for something like this. I had a few Saturn protoypes on Sega brand disc which had random labels on them, but they were only near-final versions of games that had been released.

Did they used Mega CD-R for Saturn games too?

I have thought about messaging him to see if he wanted to mail it to me so I can test it on real hardware to tell him what it is and then ship it back to him. He'd probably get more (or less) money for it that way - but I am sure he probably wouldn't trust me so I am not even going to bother asking.

    This.

Any time someone says they can't check something out like this I always assume it means that they tested it, it had nothing, and they just want to cover their butt. It's like someone selling a game and saying it's "as is" when they already know it doesn't work.

I does appear like data has been written on it is see that the CD has two different shades but I do agree there is probably nothing interesting on there so he says that the CD ejects from the CD drive.

Yea, I sent in the original message asking about what was on the disc. I'm pretty sure there's not much of value on that, and the asking price is super high for a Mega CD-R considering the questionable titling of it.

I will say, it's quite possible they are just regular old files. I know that after awhile they were just using the Mega CD-Rs in the Sega office as regular CDRs to move stuff around. The fact that this person provides no provenance for it is also a red flag for me. A lot of the Mega CD-Rs I have were from old Sega employees, game mag staff, or people with industry connections.

I did also ask him if he'd be interested in selling at a negotiated price it if it didn't go in auction, no response yet though.... If there was anything of interest I'd make sure to share though

No, they were "Sega Saturn" cdrs, but looked similar. I sold mine pretty cheap and was completely honest about what they were. These kinds of things are neat to own one of because of how they look, regardless of whatever content they have. The most I'd pay for that umknown Mega-CDR is $20.

Well someone thought it was real enough to bid on it and win. I really wonder what was on that disc. Maybe we will soon find out.

I have not used ebay for a while but it is not possible to email the winning bidder and ask him?

Dang, well it ended at $112, so much for trying to cut a deal with the guy. I also hope this doesn't set too much of a precedent for these, and if there is proto/unknown information on them then whoever bought it will release it.

I seriously doubt the person couldn't figure out what was on the disc... has anyone seen a SCD game that WASN'T plain ISO9660 format? Any computer will mount and display the files. From there, it's pretty simple to find out what's on the disc.

Are we just talking released by Sega? Or homebrew/ROM hack-gone-overkill also?

Yeah, of all the Sega CD games I own I've never had an issue with any one of them going into a regular CD drive and looking at files of them. But I do still wish I knew what was on it :3

I'm not aware of any homebrew/hack that isn't ISO9660 either. It's POSSIBLE to make a SCD that doesn't use a filesystem, or a different filesystem, but no one bothers because it's easier to just use ISO9660.

Some optical drives can be quite finicky especially some older ones, heck even some newer drives have issues with certian disks. or if the drive is old and worn out to where it has issues reading some disks, which could explain why it ejected the disk. I had a few drives that would eject a Sega CD disk when I would put one in the drive.
