That's what I do on my PC Engine Duo-R, but I'm curious if it's at all possible to use the Y, B-Y and R-Y out of the HuC6260 for Component video instead. *pulls out region-switched TurboGrafx 16 to experiment*

Tiido mentioned to me a while ago the component from it isn't formatted right for a tv. I havn't bothered testing that out.

It doesn't look that way. All I get is blue and red and a few shades of purple and orange. Well that's lame. If it's not formatted right for a TV, I guess there's no way around this, is there?

rgb out to a rgb to component video encoder should be fine. Personally I find the s-video more than good enough. The stereo sound from it sounds really weak, I wonder if it needs an audio amp?

Is there an LM358 on the PC Engine? My TurboGrafx 16 has an LM358 on its motherboard, though I don't know how loud the audio out of the expansion port is without using the TurboBooster or TurboGrafx CD (the latter of which I suggest you NEVER purchase as it's an unreliable piece of shit - get a Duo system instead).

Personally, I'd rather use Component. There's quite a noticeable difference between Component and S-Video on my TV. S-Video is a bit more smeared on some systems (Super NES in particular), there's less variation in the color saturation (colors always seem to be at maximum saturation in S-Video) and Component just looks overall sharper than S-Video. When using Component, some systems, in particular the Genesis and PC Engine look like what I'd get through emulation (except I get faint vertical lines on the Genesis which are much less noticeable than through pure RGB).

Audio through the EXP is quiet for me on my TG-16. Might be leaky caps, but before I took out the RF box, audio was decent.

Before you took out the rf box audio was decent from the EXP port or audio was decent from RF?

Audio from RF was decent. When I first did my A/V (composite) mod (RF left in), I had soft audio from the EXP. I've never got the TurboBooster, so I didn't have a benchmark for audio from the EXP.

Okay that makes sense. I know inside the rf box circuit on the nes there's an audio amp circuit for both the rca audio out and the rf audio. I bet that the pc engine uses the same concept meaning the expansion port audio needs amping.

It's not too bad once you replace that middle gear actually, and even that's not too terribly difficult from what I've seen. I'd probably say the original Duos are worse from a reliability standpoint, especially considering I've worked on several and they all needed complete recaps. I'm actually working on one right now where the CD audio is out even though I just recapped it. I've also got another that needs a calibration in the worst way and recently had the PCM chip replaced.

The caps on the original PCE Duo and TurboDuo go bad after several years like they do with the TurboExpress. When they leak they usually cause audio problems and can even cause the CD drive to go out of whack. It's not just a few either, every SMD cap on every Duo I've worked on has leaked, and even the leaded caps can go bad.

Found a major flaw in the circuit. Here's the fixed circuit:
