You save Amy Rose (aka the chick) whether or not you get the Time Stones or destroy all the badnik generators. Getting rid of the generators is the main method of completing Sonic CD. If you get all the Time Stones, the generators will already be destroyed in every following zone/act. I don't know if getting the Time Stones fixes "Bad Future" acts you have already passed or not. If you don't see a thank you screen right before the game goes back to the title screen, then you didn't fully complete Sonic CD.

Basically, in an act, if you don't break the badnik generator or haven't gotten all the Time Stones yet, you will finish the level with a "Bad Future". If you do either of those tasks, you will beat the level with a "Good Future".

Also, you never have to go to the Future during Act 1 or 2 of each level. There's nothing to do there, the hologram and generator are in the Past. The only time you "have" to visit the Future is when you reach Act 3 after getting a Good Future in the prior two acts. The only objective in the present time, is to travel to the past.

As far as I know, destroying the Metal Sonic hologram does nothing.

A fun challenge is to destroy all the generators as well as trying to get 100 rings in each the past, present and future; ending the Act with 300+ rings.
If I recall correctly, the future stages had fewer rings available - like you have to search them out more. I always enjoy playing through the good future versions of all the Acts. The music, and brighter colors, along with flowers and Flickies and bunnies hopping around really make it a fun reward to explore and traverse the time zones.

Ya'know, I tried to play Sonic CD on the PS2 Gems collection and those versions are just broken for me. I can not stand playing without being able to "suicide" kill yourself! The original designers were gracious enough to include such a mechanism in the SegaCD version.

It has been a few years since I last played Sonic CD and last night I wanted to play some good future Acts. Since it has been so long I no longer remember the easy spots to warp. I found myself fumbling and having to explore a lot more than I expected to. So after dealing with; first, using all the Future signposts and having the timer run out, then on the next life making it back to the Present, got a Future sign and while running accidentally hit a Past sign, then sucked into a hidden tube... on the SegaCD I would have done the "pause suicide" and restarted the Act. No fun for exploring and trying new routes through the game

On a first playthrough, I'd say it's longer than Sonic 1, 3 and Knuckles (not S3&K or S2). If you know where everything is, it's about the same length as the shorter Sonics.

Love Sonic CD, still the best 2D Sonic game and flex of the Sega CD's hardware.

That boss race with Metal Sonic was pretty frustrating at times though lol. You really had to not mess up in the slightest, or else that lil' bugger left you behind just like that.

Yeah that part has pissed me off several times over the years. But it also makes it that much more rewarding when you see Metal Sonic fall to his doom.

Ah Sonic CD, depending on who you talk to it's the best or it's one of the worst. I fall in the latter camp myself. The level design feels so randomly slapped together and counter-intuitive for the fast play of the other games.

I guess I wouldn't call it a bad game like I used to (the first time I played the game I just rushed through not understanding the exploration elements), it's just a different game that's not meant to be played like the other Sonics. It works for some people but not for me.

What did you think of the lame final boss?

Final boss is better than people make it out to be. Sure beats the EPIC WAITFEST that the Sonic 2 final boss tends to be if you play conservatively.
