NHL seemed to be the most stale EA Sports series for years until this generation and the introduction of the Skill Stick.
I absolutely LOVED the next gen versions NHL '97 and '98. I had them both on PC, and they simply blew everything else away. I also had '96 on PC. It was interesting because it was the first 3D hockey game (although the players were all sprites), but the jump from PC '96 to '97 was just insane.

Interesting that you bring this up, because I love the older NFL games that still have the Houston Oilers and L.A. Rams. I think I have to go back to NES Tecmo Super Bowl for those though. Not sure if Tecmo Super Bowl still had those teams on the Genesis and SNES versions. This makes me glad that I have NHL 93 and up, so I have the Whalers and Nordiques on at least one game.
    It is finished!

Definitely NHL on the Sega CD.

The sounds really add to the atmosphere of the game.

I'm a bit surprised at the lack of love for NHL 95. It's particularly weird to me because the season play options in that game (which were reasonably deep and compared favorably to Madden, IMO) weren't present in NHL 96, where instead you only play as a single team over the course of a season. Given EA Sports' big emphasis on multiplayer (to the point that they even developed their own multitap for the console), that just seems like shooting themselves in the foot.
