^Those look like cheap Chinese knock-offs.

The real, official, ones, on the other hand, are superb.

    Original 6 button Pad:

Model 3 6 button Pad (My favorite. Note the Mode button. It's on the front and less bound to break than the original 6-button pad):

Very bad, had one which came with a console and it felt like it was made out of that same plastic the cheap dvd cases that you get from the dollar store are made of. The cable out of the pad just rotates and the pad itself flexes and twists.

Look at the discolorations in the plastic and how it even dimples in below the start button. Just by looking at it you can tell they're made of very thin, crappy plastic.

Get an official one, it's going to cost more but it's worth it in the long run.

A long while ago I asked about a 6-button controller in the shape of the 3-button and somebody recommended this to me.

Recently found one on eBay and won it for cheap in an auction. Figured it was worth trying out. I like the color coded turbo set-up already.

Edit: Just got it today unexpectedly. It's got a decent build quality but of course isn't quite as good as official controllers. Still it feels really nice and is the same size as the official 3-button controller unlike the Model-3 controller. The turbo switches are great and while the buttons rattle when you shake it they function well. The D-Pad seemed pretty good as I played through Mega Turrican, would need to try SFII or something to get a better impression. So far though, thumbs up. This will probably become my primary Genesis pad.

That's the build I thought for sure Sega sold at one point, minus the turbo switches.
    It is finished!

Yay, controller thread. I have one of those Sega licensed six button pads with my Genesis 3. It's a pretty good pad actually. It's not sure if its Sega tech though. It was Majesco that released the Genesis 3. Anyway nothing beats the original 3 button pad. I love those fat buttons, but that six button pad is a good substitute for games that need them. Anyway for 3rd party controllers the SG Pro pads rock.

I believe both of the Genny 3's six-button pads were re-labeled third-party pads, the smaller one especially. The former is more scarce and only came packed-in with some Genny 3 consoles (such as mine), while the latter came both packed-in and separately at retail.

Yeah, while I've been looking around at different controllers I found this which was posted on another Sega-16 controller thread a while ago. It's the third party controller that was rebranded for the Genesis 3. An earlier version of the Competition Pro by Honey Bee.

Though I must say from my experience Honey Bee's Series III pad has been swell so far so apparently they made some improvements. Too bad this is the pad that they put in with the Genesis 3 instead though I guess it's because it was inexpensive.

I've heard good things about those...but weren't the turbo competition pro models europe-only? Or is it just that everyone in the US who owns them doesn't want to part with them?

I mean, I can understand that. Finding controllers cheaply on eBay that don't break after a month is not an easy task

I can definitely vouch for what an awful piece of shit these things are. Bought one locally because I was impatient and wanted a 6 button pad. I should have run when the first ones d-pad had fallen off in the box....
Every button rattles and the whole thing is just terrible

Indeed, they usually die in a matter of months; sooner if you look at them the wrong way.

It's really not worth it. Plastic is cheap and flimsy, and as noted there's no real weight to it. The buttons rattle (i.e., fit poorly in the unit) and since it's small it's not very comfortable to hold. Cord's got almost no reach as well.

It's only worth it if you're really desperate for controllers, but you either need to replace them bimonthly or save up for something more substantial. It's always interesting to take bets on whether the controller cable, plug, or d-pad is going to die first.
