    Which is what's tipping me off. And blending two consecutive frames doesn't result in this kind of issue either (you'd see the obscured graphic blended in too).

    Would like to say it's the trick where you use low priority sprites on top of high priority sprites and a high priority tilemap in order to turn the former into a silhouette for the tilemap (see: the lightbulbs in Bright Darkness), but even that wouldn't likely look like this, and if you want to use it to fake blending instead of a silhouette it's not practical for more than one sprite either...

    So yeah, no idea what's going on.

    I don't understand much technicalities, but can't it be a simple thing, like the same trick used in the purple water of Sonic 2's chemical zone? Or dither? Or simply palette changes, since in this elevator no one will move out of the 'purple zone'.
