There are tons of games that looked excellent on MD using a cartoon-y style. X-Men on MD/G vs SNES - these were developed by different people with different experience and different tools in different companies and with different budgets and time. And yes, on different hardware too.

Anyway, this does remind me a bit of Eternal Champions, I agree. The backgrounds look a lot better than in EC though.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

There is dithering all over the place in comics.

you have a point but as I said the neo geo or 32 bit was better, once they could use 32 bit colour, the simpsons games never looked that great

I like the MD as much as anyone else but lets not pretend it was perfect, the gameplay is what mattered

I used to really dislike this sort of shading/dithering as a kid. But once I saw more comics and drawings doing the crosshatch shading, I started to appreciate it more. I think its a nice style when done well, I like how comic zone handles it.

The only kind of dithering I don't like is taking a real photo, or CGI, and automatically lowering the color, such as in MKIII's backgrounds on Genesis. Especially for low resolution photos blown up where the pixels are visible, this just doesn't work. Higher resolution photos with generic dithering can look fine, and art designed around dithering is totally its own thing.

XMEN 2 is ok, If I'm to counter my own argument then Aladdin is cartoon like, and I think that's one of the best looking 16 bit games

I hate the dithering, its a great sprite but the colours should be solid, as long as the gameplay is good that's all that matters

I don't have a problem with them using dithering, it's the vertical dithering I don't like.

See, checkerboard dithering still looks ok regardless of wether you're playing on composhit or RGB (better on composhit, but still acceptable in RGB).
Vertical dithering does not look good in RGB.

Vertical dithering was mainly used for blending better than regular dithering, but on composhit everything is a blurry mess anyway. It's not an advantage.

BTW are there any gameplay details?
Like will there be some RPG-ish elements like in River City Ransom...

If they use alot of horizontal/difuse dirthering in backgrounds is cool, and i dont have any problem with that.
we have good exemples of this like alien soldier and gunstar heroes etc..
but vertical dirthering in characters is bad cuz destroy some of the artwork if you play in high definition output (svideo/ rgb)
