Can Sega-16 Beat Every Genesis Game in 2013?: The "Official" FAQ

    Current status: 75.5% complete (521/690)

(see post #2 for the list of claims and beaten games)

    Q: What's this all about?

A: We're trying to beat all 711 officially licensed, US-released Genesis games within the calendar year of 2013. See the end of this post for a list.

This is inspired by a similar thread over at NintendoAge, where as of this writing they're only 10 games away from beating all the licensed US NES releases. (Update: and they did it, with only a couple hours to spare!)

    Q: Who can participate?

A: Any registered member of Sega-16. However, we reserve the right to disallow victories from posters with fewer than 10 posts (though a well-written, friendly post that includes a photograph will almost certainly be accepted).

Q: What games can I work on?

A: Any Genesis game that was officially released in the US during the lifespan of the Genesis.

Q: Where can I see a list of those?

A: In the first second post of this thread, or in SpaceFlea's excellent Google Docs spreadsheet which separates the list into available, claimed, beaten, and disallowed games.

    Q: What games are disallowed?

A: Anything that wasn't released in the US, anything that wasn't released by a publisher licensed by Sega (e.g. Wisdom Tree games), anything that isn't a game (e.g. Art Alive), and anything that's just a compilation of other games (e.g. Genesis 6-Pak).

Q: What about Pier Solar/Super Fighter Team games?

A: Disallowed, as they're not officially licensed by Sega. Hacks, homebrews, and patched translations are all out.

Q: What about Sega Channel games?

A: We have a special annex for those games, now open here! It's not officially part of the main 711, so consider it a fun side project, like an exhibition sport at the Olympics.

Q: I have the European/Japanese version. Can I play that?

A: If the game plays the same, it's fine; cosmetic differences can probably be overlooked. But games that are substantially different (Marble Madness) or easier (Bare Knuckle III, Dynamite Headdy) are definitely out. If there's any question about differences, ask and someone will know the answer.

Q: What about Sega CD / 32X / Master System games?

    A: Not happening this year.

Q: What's this about "claiming" games?

A: Posters are allowed to pick 2 games that they're going to begin working on, and informally "reserve" them so no one else inadvertently starts working on the same game. (NOTE: As of November 2013, none of this really applies, since we're mainly trying to get as many games done before year's end as possible. Just beat whatever you can.)

We ask that people not simultaneously claim 2 popular games, especially not 2 popular games in the same genre or series. Claiming Sonic 2 and Phantasy Star II = bad; claiming Justice League Task Force and 688 Attack Sub = fine. However, people can claim as many sports games as they want. Once one of those games is beaten, you can pick a different one to replace it. However, if you "claim" a game and you don't post about it for 3-4 weeks, it automatically goes back into the pool.

Once again, claiming a game means "I'm going to immediately start working on this, and will post updates, so please don't start working on it too". It's a courtesy, not a certificate of ownership, and its value is as a promise to your fellow posters that you'll do your best to take care of a game so they can direct their attentions elsewhere. It's definitely not meant as a way to put games you like "on hold" so you can pull them out when you feel like it in a few weeks.

Q: Do I have to claim a game to work on it?

A: Absolutely not, but it's helpful for us to know you're working on it. Also, please don't be a jerk and beat a game that someone else is working hard on.

Come November - December, most of this goes out the window, as the #1 priority becomes getting it done. (EDIT: And indeed, it's out the window as of November 2013. Just beat everything/anything you can.)

Q: What's this about a sports game "requirement"?

A: If you claim/beat/work on a really popular game like Sonic 2, we ask that you also take on a sports game. Otherwise we'll be drowned in sports games at the end of the year. Out of the Genesis's 711 official releases, over a quarter are sports games! You can see a list posted by StarMist here.

Q: But I don't own any sports games, and I only play on real hardware!

A: Chances are high that someone will be happy to send you a sports game from their collection. Most of us have extra, unwanted titles.

Q: But I don't wanna play a sports game! I just wanna play Sonic and Shinobi and the gun game and beat them and have everyone say how great I am!

A: Tough! (Can I interest you in a pony?)

Q: How do we prove that we beat the game?

A: We're relying on the honor system, but photographs or screenshots of the ending credits are strongly encouraged. The best thing of all is to take a picture (with a camera) of the final screen, with a little slip of paper against the TV/monitor that has your username on it.

Q: Can I use my old passwords or save games?

A: Absolutely not. The game has to be played from start to finish between January 1st and December 31st. Otherwise, what's the point?

    Q: Can I use emulation?

A: Yes, but don't use savestates, that's cheating.

(Possible exception: you can use savestates to temporarily suspend your game, i.e. if you're in the middle of a game and something catches on fire. But don't resume more than once from the same savestate. If that explanation doesn't make sense to you, just don't use savestates at all.)

    Q: What about codes/cheats/debug modes/Game Genies/pause button slowdown?

A: No to all of those, with two exceptions:
    (1) If the code is listed on the manual or in-game, then it's OK. For example, Altered Beast lists the game's continue code in the manual.
    (2) You can use a Game Genie to bypass region lockout.

Q: What about in-game exploits, or taking advantage of bugs in the game?

A: Those are fair play, unless they totally destroy the integrity of the game. We all know the difference between a clever trick and something that feels like cheating.

    Q: What about turbo/autofire?

A: Generally OK, especially in shmups (there's no excuse for a post-1988 shmup not having autofire), but if it feels like cheating let us know and we can discuss it.

    Q: What about walkthroughs?

A: You can use one, sure. But c'mon, try to beat the game without it first, especially if it's a puzzle-solving game.

Q: What about playing in co-op mode?

A: Generally OK, but this will vary somewhat by game. Don't start a game of Marble Madness just to make Player 2 lose.

Q: What about collaborating with someone, so I don't have to beat every level/win every season game all by myself?

A: Absolutely! Whether it's taking turns with a fellow Sega-16 member in person, or handing off your last password to another member when you get tired of a game, collaboration is welcome.

Q: Do I have to get the best ending?

A: No, but you have to get a good ending. By design, bad endings don't really count as beating the game. If you're not sure, ask in-thread.

Q: Do I have to play as every character/get every ending/play every path/get 100% completion?

A: Generally speaking, no, but we'll take it on a case-by-case basis as necessary.

Q: Do I have to play on the hardest difficulty?

A: Only if that's necessary to see the full game or get a good ending. Otherwise, you can play on the default settings or the equivalent of Normal (not Easy). But if you want to beat it on the hardest setting, that's awesome, of course!

Q: What if the game has no ending?

A: We'll take these on a case-by-case basis. In some cases, beating the high score will be enough; in others, getting to the highest possible level will do the trick; and in others, we'll have to figure out some sane compromise.

Q: What about sports games? How much do I have to play in order to beat them?

A: This is a real problem, and may be a bone of contention. Again, we're worried about getting snowed under by the system's 175+ sports games. The basic sense is this:

    - If you're allowed to skip straight to the championship mode (e.g. the World Series), then beating that mode is good enough to beat the game.

    - If the game requires you to play through a season to reach the championships, we're not sure what we'll do about that. We don't want sports games to sink this effort, but we also don't want to dumb things down too much. Baseball is the biggest issue, obviously.

    - What's awesome is when someone actually enjoys these games and is willing to see them through. Some of our resident sports fans get tired of taking crap for their sporty fondness, so be nice to them and maybe they'll take one for and from the team.

    Q: Anything else?

A: Yes -- we highly encourage you to post comments or "mini-logs" about the game you're beating, especially if it's an obscure or tough one. This thread shouldn't be a bare listing of accomplishments, and if we play our cards right it could be a treasure trove of information about the Genesis library and how to beat it!

This thread is now open for business!

The project begins on January 1, 2013 (2013-01-01), with the stroke of midnight in your local time zone. So Sega-16 members who live in Kiribati at GMT +14, you're up first!

I've moved the list of games and claims to post #2 so that it's easier to permalink directly to it.

here's a list of Sega channel games that are confirmed to be dumped:
    -Alien Soldier (claimed by me)
-Mega Man: The Wily Wars (claimed by me)
    -Pulse Man
    -Golden Axe 3
    -Donald Duck in Maui Mallard
    -Mr. Nutz
    -International Rugby Body Count
    -Blood Shot/Battle Frenzy
    -Power Drive
    -Nightmare Circus
    -Sonic Eraser

If nobody else claims these then I can take it upon myself to try beating them one-by-one, I have an everdrive so I can play them on the original hardware.

    I'll take on these titles:

    Beavis and Butthead
    Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker

I'll hit a few local used game shops and get a sports title to work on since I don't own any

Isn't this thread for posting game completions and not requesting games? I thought at was the deal. Also Alec Rob, don't take all the Sega channel games, I may be interested in Maui Mallard and Golden Axe 3 and Pulseman on my Everdrive.

AlecRob, could you start a new thread called "Can Sega-16 Beat Every Genesis Game in 2013? - The Sega Channel Annex!" or something similar? I was going to start one myself, but if I did you wouldn't be able to edit it -- I think it deserves a thread of its own, and I'd be grateful if you'd run it. I'll add a link to the first post once it's up.

You can have Beavis and Moonwalker, but (1) not Funkotron since we're keeping it to 2 non-sports games per person at a time, and (2) you'll need to do a sports game too (please) since Moonwalker's quite popular.

It's mainly for posting game completions and documenting gameplay. Once this gets started, I want "claims" to come out of that process -- not "I claim this game, it is mine!" but "Hey, I'm going to start working on _____, OK?"

(Claims were never meant to be wishlists or proprietary reservations -- mainly, they're just a way of keeping two people from working on the same game.)

Seems "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" got broken up into separate games.

A little cryptic, but I saw your post here. I'll add you in, and it'd be appreciated if you'd offer to do a sports game too. There's also an "Introduce Yourself!" topic if you want to, well, introduce yourself.

According to QuickSciFi, if you play Sonic 3 with the S&K lock-on, the final boss sequence is shorter (and presumably easier) than in the "full" Sonic 3. So his thinking (see posts here, here, and here) was that it shouldn't count as beating Sonic 3 if you use the lock-on. Sonic & Knuckles would still count with the lock-on, though, since you're really just using Sonic 3's gamesave capability. I'm not really familiar with Sonic 3 or S&K, so I don't have an opinion/a horse in this race -- I'm just following his lead.

(I definitely do think that Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles should have individual entries and should be beaten individually, though, since they were commercially available separately. I have no personal opinion on whether we should include Sonic 2 & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles as games in their own right, but a couple posters were strongly against it, so...)

Anyway, do you still want to do Sonic & Knuckles on its own (or using Sonic 3 to save), and/or Sonic 3 on its own?

Please folks, refrain from posting what you aim to beat on this thread. There's another thread for that. Otherwise it'll get very chaotic very fast when people start stating what they've actually beaten.

    Have an awesome 2013, everyone.

It's not actually wetheperson's fault, I directed him to post here. (Well, I was expecting him to post more than just the titles of the games. )

I'm trying to figure out how to handle the issue -- I don't want this thread to turn into a total mess, but it's confusing having two threads (especially since I can't rename the other one to say "Claims here!").

I don't have a problem with people posting "I've started working on ______", since I'll be interested in reading updates from people slogging their way through Koei games and the like.

Once the year starts, though, I'm not so interested in reserving games for people who haven't actually begun the process of trying to beat them. Good news is, the more we get done, the easier the logistics get.

Have an awesome 2013 to you too!

A log of long games would be awesome, I agree.

Might I jump in and get Ecco Tides of Time as well? I noticed you saying it was unclaimed.

Hmmm, I'd rather not hold too many games in reserve for one person, if possible. You're 100% welcome to play it and beat it, of course -- there's no restriction on going after unclaimed games.

In other news, NintendoAge just made their goal with only a couple of hours to spare! Will Sega-16 have to cut it similarly close? We'll find out in 365 days or fewer...
