Default Zero Tolerance Link Cable Tutorial

So if you ever wanted to make a link cable for the game Zero Tolerance so you could play 2-player co-op, this is for you. First you would need 2 tv's - 2 Genesis (MegaDrive) systems - 2 Zero Tolerance games - and of course the ever important Link Cable. You can make the cable two different ways, but I will show you method 1..... the way i did it. I will list what it takes so you can make one from store bought parts for method 2. Here is a list of what you will need to make your own cable:

    Method 1
    - 2 old controllers you don't use anymore
    - wire strippers (or another method to get casing off of really small wires)
    - Soldering gun (or some way to get the wires to stay together)

    Method 2
    - two 9 pin D-sub's (female)
    - wire
    - soldering gun

    Ok, so here we go......................
    Step 1
Unscrew the back casing of a Genesis(Megadrive) controller

You will notice a set of 9 colored wires connected to the board. You can de-solder the wires away from the board, but not all controllers are the same. So you may have to just clip the wires away from the board and then strip some of the casing away to get enough exposed wire to work with.

    Step 2
Getting to know which wires to use and what color corresponds to what pin. Here is a 9 pin D-sub picture:

Here is the list you need:
    pin 1 - brown
    pin 2 - red
    pin 3 - orange
    pin 4 - yellow
    pin 5 - not used
    pin 6 - not used
    pin 7 - grey
    pin 8 - black
    pin 9 - white

    Step 3
    Connecting the wires................
Here is a picture used by the creators of Zero Tolerance, Technopop:

The colors used in this picture don't represent what colors are in the controller wiring, so use the little pin list I created above. As you would have noticed there are 9 wires, but to make the link cable wires 5 and 6 are not used. So just go ahead and clip those wires away and not worry about them.

    - When you have a grasp as to what wires go together start to solder the wires 1-4, 7 and 9 (swapped) and also 8. Meaning wire 1 on the fist cabel goes with wire 1 on the second cable, and so
on. Don't forget that wires 7 and 9 need to be swapped.
Once that is done, here is what mine looked like:

    Step 4
Plug one end in controller port 2 of first Genesis and the other end in controller port 2 on the second Genesis. It should look something like this:

    Step 5
    Playing the game.........
    - Just turn both of the Genesis systems on
    - go to the option screen
    - choose the 2 player (via cable)
    - start the game

Once one player starts the game, it will bring up a message letting you know it's waiting for the other player. When the second player starts, it will launch the game and you will have 2 players playing co-op like this:

The soldier looking guy is the second player in the first players screen. You should see a red dot next to you on your map indicating the second player. It doesn't matter which character you choose they all look like this (i think).

    Step 6
Enjoy Zero Tolerance with 2 player co-op!!!!!!

If anyone would like to make this a sticky or take all of this information and turn it into a article for the site, that would be awesome. Or if there is something I need to add to this little tutorial, please let me know and I will make corrections.

    thanks and enjoy

Did you send this to Melf yet to get it made into a feature? That would probably work out best.

That rules, dude, I've never had the chance to play Zero Tolerance co-op. How'd you figure out how to make this?

I had seen that this game is 2 player co-op through a link cable.... so i searched for one and came up with that picture provided by Technopop. Then i just decided to go ahead and make one.

I don't think it would work. The Zero Tolerance solution is utilized as a "real" network with two TV sets, one for each of the players. And it makes use of the (almost)combined horse power of both systems.

If the team player was involved, split screen would probably be the only way to pull it off, and a single MegaDrive/Genny would fail miserably at doing that... I suspect
Bare Knuckle III rules! Also, the music in this game is freakin awesome.

I think he ment using the componets inside the team player for the wiring, instead of taking apart a controller. Or use it to be a splitter between the two tvs.

That would probably work, but why not just chop up a pair of controllers instead?

Is the team player really so commen in the US, that you can kill it in the name of science?

Nah, it cannot work. ZT link cable is like a crossed cable while Team player cannot root any signal from one port to the other.
