A Japanese magazine in 1994... I had found a specific attribution and quotation on the intertubes, but now I've lost it.

Regardless, I have to abandon my theory. It seems that Castlevania for 32x really was a full sequel to Rondo of Blood, and indeed morphed into Symphony of the Night. But it was a big metamorphosis. From 1up:

Thankfully, Koji Igarashi was able to shed some light on the subject for us. "We made an early playable version," he says. "But the game did not progress because our company's policy toward the hardware changed. Management decided to make the PlayStation our focus, so we made some drastic changes to our initial ideas and ended up with Symphony of the Night."
So I guess the only thing that remains left to speculation is exactly what Castlevania: The Bloodletting was like while it was still in development for 32x. If there really was an early playable version, maybe someday (in my dreams) they could do a "Shenmue Saturn" type bonus video in some future release.

We should strive for an interview with someone who worked at konami and might possibly have some info on it. An interview with someone from konami would be awesome anyway though.

I like to think that it would have been great. The 32X wasn't overly hot at 3D but with the bigger cart size and extra oomph it should have had some pretty snazzy 2D if they'd just tried.

Bigger cart size? I was under the impression that 32x was subject to the exact same cart size restrictions as Genesis.

Neither have any real restrictions. Only 32Mb per bank.

32x cds could have been sweet. Using the sega cd asic chip with 32x = ultra hardcore blast processing to the max. Like a really really poor mans neo geo. Probably hair pulling to program for with all the bottlenecks etc
