arcade Consensus around the best 200ish games? input needed

EDIT: I now realise I took Sega-16's reviews for the forum's consensus and that is far from being the case, Super Thunder Blade being the most blatant case of course. So my mistake. When I created the first list I thought I was somewhat in knowledge of what the consensus of this forum was, being that I had browsed most if not all the site's reviews many times by then. So as of now this list tries to represent both sides but I added most if not all Barone's and other users suggestions, totalling around 250 games instead of the initial 170-ish.

check this updated first post first and #28 for Barone's comments on many games on this list.

CROSSED OUT: removed to keep us under 200
RED: disputed (atm you can look at post #28 for removal suggestions)

NOTE: I've merged Barone's list (with the 2P suggestions and others I previously crossed out). Now it's a 250 game list. I'm trying to get it down to 200. Please suggest removals and/or additions.

    BEGIN of original first post:
This list is based on hours & hours of reading Sega-16 site & forums (& forum top lists... & Game Sack!) + personal preference (duh) and is presented here both in alphabetical order (easier for you to track down if a game is there or not) and also in chronological+alphabetical order. It includes many japanese & european exclusives.

I can get this down to a top 175 without Tintin in Tibet (best Infogrames game -sic), Art of Fighting (worse port than Samurai Shodown's) and maybe Dune (haven't played it), but I'm having a hard time getting it down to 150 (but it can be done), and I'm not sure I want to put third class games just to get to a 200 game list. Any suggestions to add or remove games is very welcome.

This is what Sega-16 & me seem to consider the best 178 I'llcountthemlater games ever released for the Megadrive/Genesis:

    SEE UP HERE

    A NOTE ON SPORTS GAMES:
I tried to keep only one game per sport (more for the world's most popular sport, though). I can't decide between Pete Sampras and its 96 iteration (bigger and better animation but worse gameplay?). Some prefer Jennifer Capriati (also on this list anyway), but gameplay on both is very good and Sampras has far superior graphics. I'm also having a hard time picking a NFL game (I think the chosen one is considered the best).

And no, no Bubsy. And yes, I know total consensus on a list is impossible, I'm just trying to elaborate a reference list which is bigger than most of the ones that are often cited in these forums, based on many of your input here over the years. Of course personal taste cannot be set aside, but I didn't include some lame favorites like King of monsters or World Cup Italia 90.

If one plays better, shouldn't that be the defining factor?

No, because then Tetris would be the best game on this and any system, even if the Megadrive version looks awful.
Sampras 96 looks better than Sampras but handling seems to be harder (hence the worse gameplay claim), but I'm not sure because I haven't played the 96 game that much.

I liked Zero Wing, but I've never come across anybody who agrees with me, and I didn't even like it that much. I guarantee nobody's going to like you putting it on a best (any number) list.
It may no longer be the `90s, but there is still time for Klax.

Actually I think it's an ok+ shooter that plays very nice. And it's one of the most famous games ever released on the Megadrive, just second to Sonic (but for different reasons). One of the worst shmups on this list, but I think it is better than at least other 500 MD games, hence the choice.
I'm not against removing it from here. Let's wait for other reactions

All in all a nice list with many essentials listed. My notes:

Virtua Racing won't work on a flash cart.

    Taz-Mania, Theme Park?

Jennifer Capriati / Grandslam Tennis is really sweet, but not the best Tennis game, and neither is Pete Samprass for all I care. My pick would be Wimbledon.

And not all of those onehundredfiftytwo Dave Perry style [Disney] games by Virgin are worth keeping in a Top 200 imho. Also only 1x Road Rash and 1x Phantasy Star but 3x Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike?

Games like Vixen 357, Dyna Bros 1 & 2 ot Hybrid Front, Lord Monarch or Star Cruiser make no sense to include (yet), no objections there. But then Rent-A-Hero gotta go as well as it is not fully translated yet.

Not sure there's a good Golf game that deserves to be on a list like this... maybe if you'd do a Top 500...

I might be wrong but Art of Fighting doesn't seem that good of a port. Certainly can't compete with Fatal Fury 2 and Samurai Shodown.

As for missing games, if I were to pick only one it'd be Golden Axe III !

The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

I think the ATP Tour Championship Tennis engine is hugely improved over Wimbledon. Also, Wimbledon might be OK in multiplayer, but it turns into a cheap, cheating bastard toward the end of the game.

Personally I think David Crane's Amazing Tennis is the best I've played on the MD, with Davis Cup Tennis in second, but I haven't played Capriati or either Sampras game that much yet.

It's an unattractive port with some weird changes and an unwanted difficulty increase about the Genesis version, but it actually plays better in some ways than the Neo Geo original. I prefer it over Samurai Shodown, can't say about FF2.

Main ones I think are missing: El Viento, Faery Tale Adventure, Gain Ground, Jewel Master, the Tengen/JPN (not EA!) version of Marble Madness, Trampoline Terror, and (if you're feeling strategic and very, very patient) Warrior of Rome II. I like the first Smurfs game as well.

No idea why Mazin Saga or Pinocchio are on there; they're both good-looking but fall short in the gameplay department.

Oh geez, I hadn't noticed that you were missing Phantasy Star II. That belongs on here for sure.

Taz-Mania is a bad, bad game.
It may no longer be the `90s, but there is still time for Klax.

Thanks for your input all of you. Actually many games cited have been considered but scrapped in the end, and the ones you suggest to remove have always been in the verge of being scrapped (sorry not native english speaker here).

As you can see, I have a preference for good looking games even if gameplay is not that good: Taz-Mania looks beautiful for a 4 MEGA game, and was there also for nostalgic reasons. I'm removing it.

I don't get The Punisher praise, please explain details about its goodness. A too simplistic brawler and animation is not very good, especially considering its a latter game. Actually, there aren't many good brawlers on the system, except for SoRs and GA (and it's just an ok port, but the game is a Classic).

Golden Axe III didn't make it outside Japan and there's a reason to it. I think consensus is that its a very average game that gets praised because of it exclusiveness. I'm willing to give it another shot (I'm going to play it some more time) because I'm not sure how it compares to Golden Axe II (but it seems most of you prefer GA I to GA II to GA III).

As for Neo-Geo ports I think consensus is Samurai Shodown > Fatal Fury 2 > Art of Fighting > King of Monsters 2 > World Heroes > Fatal Fury > King of Monsters, so I'm also scrapping Art of Fighting (only 16 meg and it shows) but keeping the first two.

I need more opinions about Theme Park. There aren't many games of this genre on the system and I think this is probably the best one. I enjoyed it at the time though it feels like a PC game.

I'm putting Phantasy Star II (definately not III) but I haven't played it yet, I just omitted it because there's consensus around IV being the best one, but it's true that I've put the three Strike games so...

Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike were landmarks at the time ('shmup of the year' awards etc) and considered both very original and good looking games, there's no way I'm removing them even if Sega-16 considers they haven't aged well (I can consider just keeping one or two of them, though).

I agree there are many Disney and David Perry games on the list, but they look gorgeous (character animation, etc) and many of them were 16 meg platformes and it shows. Even Cool Spot is very playable. I have doubts about Pocahontas & Pinocchio among others, but I think gameplay isn't the only criteria to factor here (see my Tetris argument up here).

The request on removing Rent-A-Hero looks reasonable, doing it.

SPORTS games: I've never played one single golf game, but personal opinions aside, was I wrong considering PGA Tour III is widely considered the best one? I'm ready to scrap it entirely as maybe there's no real need for a golf game on the list, but I'm reluctant to replace it for another one if opinions differ on which one.
I didn't see the whole there's-no-consensus-on-Sampras&Capriati-being-the-best-Tennis-games coming. I'll try Wimbledon, ATP & David Crane's and get back to you, but I don't see what is what you don't like in Sampras.
Road Rash 1 was made obsolete by 2, but 3 wasn't well recieved because of digitized sprites.
The list is absolutely not Everdrive oriented (even if I'm stress-testing the list on it) so I'm keeping Virtua Racing and Pier Solar.

I need some clarification on the Marble Madness thing.

I have considered El Viento & Trampoline Terror (I'm not that familiar with those games, but seem very dated) but didn't think about Jewel Master, I'll try it.

@goldenband what is Night Driver? AKA title?

Any comment on the unlicensed games listed?

How about Splatterhouses, Wolfenstein sega-16 most updated rom demo, Duke Nukem 3D, Metal Sonic Hyperdrive (very good homebrew), Sonic Chaos Heroes (A+ homebrew), Midnight Resistance.

Ah, Splatterhouse, was waiting for this one. I don't pretend to offend anyone here, but I find Splatterhouse 3 to be the absolute most overrated game on the system. Extremely simplistic brawler that gets praised because of the gore, ambience (?), etc but it doesn't justify its size (16 meg!) nor its release date (it came after SoR II!).

Duke Nukem port is BS, everyone agrees on that. ATM I'm not including hacks even if there are very good ones (you cited them). I'm not sure what to do with Wolfenstein, are you talking about Genesis version (32X will not be considered)? I'm giving Midnight Resistance a shot, not familiar with it (get back to this thread with reports).

The limit in what games to consider could be if they have been put on cart and sold (even unlicensed), but I'm not sure on that.

I agree on the Punisher, I had to give it up for the "Can Sega-16 beat every.." thread because try as I might I cannot beat it on hard. The animation and color selection being poor, there being too few enemies on screen and in variety, the game still slowing down, and the music sucking really did this one in for me. Also, here is a list that I have been adding to for a good long while. It isn't a best of list though, it is solely based on games being recommended for gameplay related reasons (even bad ones). I'm not sure if the Notable Games lists will help you or make the task hopelessly impossible, but there it is.
