Default Interest check: Sega CD "beat-'em-all" for 2014?

EDIT: The official thread for this project is now open! Head on over there.

Most of you probably know about the Genesis beat-'em-all effort we've been doing this year, trying to beat all 690 winnable licensed US releases. (As of now, it looks like we'll end the year around 75%, but we may just keep going into 2014.)

Is there interest in doing the same thing for Sega CD, i.e. trying to beat all the US licensed releases in 2014? After eliminating 5 titles which AFAIK can't be meaningfully beaten, it looks like we'd be dealing with 142 games total, which is much more manageable than 690:

    not beatable:

    The Animals! (San Diego Zoo)
    Colors of Modern Rock
    Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia
    My Paint
    Rock Paintings/Hot Hits

We could also include PAL exclusives (The Smurfs, Syndicate, Theme Park) as an extra bonus, since there are only three. The GDG prototypes could be an optional bonus too, though I'm not sure which ones are complete enough to be beatable (and that starts to get away from the idea of doing licensed releases).

Are folks interested in this, and willing and able to participate? It'd be a good way to get the rest of the Sega CD library reviewed, too -- around 32 games on this list haven't been reviewed by Sega-16 yet.

BTW the 32X CD games would be part of a separate effort for the 32X, I'd think.

Count me in! Now I can start at the beginning of the year rather than the end of it!

    I'm definitely interested.

I actually just bought a copy of Popful Mail too, and I'm excited to play it, so I'll probably tackle that one right away if there's no objections.

Everyone would want to play Popful Mail. We would have to draw straws or do a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament.

Ha ha, yeah that's true. A lottery sounds fair to me.

If it's okay to do this on emulators (won't be using save states), I might give Chuck Rock II a go.

Beating a game that has already been eliminated will not be helpful to the 100% completion goal but here is a thought.

With a list this small it is inevitable multiple participants will complete some of the same games. Maybe this should be encouraged and every participant who completes a game be denoted instead of just the first person.

A tally of total # of SCD games beaten 2014 could be a fun statistic to keep track of.

I'll be starting on two games next week - NHL '94 & Dark Wizard.

Nice to see folks are interested! I think this could be fun, and is a far more attainable goal than the full Genesis library.

Sure, that'd be fine, and there's always the option (where applicable) of beating the game on a higher difficulty setting than whomever beat it previously, or with a higher score, doing a 1CC or 1LC, etc.

BTW, I think we shouldn't do any claims. I'd be happy to make a note if someone's actively working on a game, but basically I think it should be whoever beats the game first = so be it, and nothing is "reserved" for anyone. And that goes well with your idea of potentially listing multiple victors.

Cool! As soon as 2014 begins in your time zone, you've got the green light.

Well let's get ALL of the rules established FIRST before we venture on this quest. I don't like things to be confusing.

^Oh, certainly, and I'd be starting a new thread with the rules upfront. Here's what I posted in the 32X thread, and probably should've reposted here:

"It'd be a streamlined version of the rules we used in 2013: no claims or reserving games, just beat the game on Normal or higher without using cheats, codes, old passwords/savegame files, or emulator savestates."

So let's see, a draft version might look something like this:

    • We're beating all of the officially-licensed games released in the US for the Sega CD, except the 32X games which are in a different thread. PAL exclusives and Good Deal Games releases may be added as a "bonus" event.
    • We begin at midnight on January 1st in your local time zone.
    • Victory conditions: the "default" is to beat each game on Normal/Medium or higher difficulty, and to do whatever's needed to get a good ending (it doesn't have to be the best ending, but can't be a bad ending). If the game allows you to change the starting number of lives or continues, you may, though default settings are slightly preferred.
    • We're using the honor system, but screenshots of the ending screens are strongly preferred, ideally with a piece of paper with your username in the shot.
    • No cheats, codes, or old passwords/savegame files from before January 1, 2014. Emulation is OK but no savestates.
    • No claims or "reserving" games -- first come, first serve, and anyone can beat any game at any time. But if you're working on a long game, let us know and we'll try not to step on each other's toes.
    • If someone else has beaten the game you wanted, you're welcome to beat it too, and we'll make a note of it. You're especially encouraged to beat it on a higher difficulty, get the best ending, use a different character or a different scenario, 1CC/1LC the game, etc.
    • If you don't know what it takes to beat a particular game, ask, but we may not know the answer for all games. You don't have to beat fighting games with every character. If a game should have special conditions, let us know.
    • Any registered member of Sega-16 can participate. Members with fewer than 10 posts are strongly encouraged to include screenshots of ending screens; if you just say "Hey, what up, I beat Sonic and Shining Force", we'll probably ignore you.
    • Everyone is encouraged to write a little something about each game. Tell us how to beat it, tell us what you like or don't like about it, tell us something you discovered that no one else on the Internet has written about. Make this thread fun to read, and a helpful document for future generations of Sega CD players!

    Does that about cover it?

Doh! I sold all of my Sega CD stuff like a year and a half ago. Would have loved the opportunity to play Shining Force CD again for this. I probably would have laid claim to Hook and Prince of Persia since they aren't particularly popular games on the SCD, and I can beat them in about a half hour each.

175 games left in the Genesis effort plus these plus 36 32X games... holy jumping hell, 36? FUCK YOU, SEGA! I wasted my damn money on one of those at launch argh argh argh. Can't believe they're going for $30 on eBay either.

...ahem. It equals 353 games for 2014. We managed at least 515 this year, but a lot of that was the topic being really active at the start when people seemed excited about it. People seem fatigued of it now. In my opinion, it might be a better idea to just try and finish off the Genesis for now and save the addons for another time.
It may no longer be the `90s, but there is still time for Klax.

    I'd absolutely beat some titles.
I am known as Theretrogamer12345 on Youtube and Sega-16. I am known as Gunstar Hero on Digital Press. My eBay account is Theretrogamer
